Watch the movie “THE JOY LUCK CLUB” .

The movie tells the story of 8 women, 4 mother- daughter pairs. About half of the movie takes place in China, the other half in America, mostly inside the Chinese American Community.

YOU WILL BE USING THE MOVIE FOR SEVERAL DISCUSSION BOARD ASSIGNMENTS SO BE SURE TO TAKE GOOD NOTES AS YOU WATCH THE MOVIE!! The story-line is far from simple so map out who is who and what happens to whom.

The key concept of chapter 4 is SOCIALIZATION!

1) Select 3 scenes from the movie JOY LUCK CLUB where you could see how the child (person) was being taught to become a “good” member of that society. Describe the scenes you selected and the lesson that it contains.

2) This part needs to be at least HALF (=50%) of your posting in length – Now think of three situations/experiences from your own life where you learned something about how to function in OUR society. Please try to describe experiences that happened when you were 3-12 years old. What were you shown or told? What did that mean to you at the time? Looking back, how did that experience change you into the person you are today?

Both question 1 about the movie and question 2 about your life should be answered about equal length.
