1. Using examples from “The Dream of the Rood,” Beowulf, and “Book 1” of Paradise Lost, explain what role Christianity and the Bible play in British Literature based on what we covered in this class. Use at least one specific example quote from each work to explain your overall answer.

2. Using examples from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the poems from Week 4 (Edmund Spencer, Christopher Marlowe, Sir Philip Sidney, and William Shakespeare), explain how courtly love from Sir Gawain in some ways sticks around in the poetry of the late 1500s and early 1600s and how it has changed. Use example quotes from the texts to explain your answer.

3. Using examples from “The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale” from The Canterbury Tales and The Diary written by Samuel Pepys, explain how the way women are treated has changed or stayed the same from Middle Ages (around 1300s) to the mid-1600s. Use example quotes from the texts to explain your answer.

4. Using examples from Twelfth Night and Gulliver’s Travels, explain how these work use different styles of humor for different purposes. Use at least two specific example quotes from each text to make your comparisons and explain your answer.

5. Explain how “The Miller’s Tale” in the Canterbury Tales is similar to Gulliver’s Travels when it comes to humor and satire and pointing out human flaws. Use at least two specific example quotes from each text to make your comparisons and explain your answer.

Essay Question: You should write a good basic literary argument with a clear thesis and reasons why, which will be explained in the body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should argue each individual point logically with at least one direct quote from the primary text (the literary work) per paragraph. The direct quotes should be cited and incorporated into your argument. Work cited page is not necessary if you are using the textbook for the class for page/line numbers. I will check for grammar and correct handling of quotes according to MLA. (50 points total for the section)

1. Using at least one quote from three of the works covered during the term, explain the best lesson students can learn from reading British Literature from the Middle Ages through the 18th century and the reasons why. Or, you can approach it as how students can apply the best lesson that can be learned from reading British Literature from the Middle Ages through the 18th century. Essentially, I want you to connect the literature of these periods to a typical student’s life today.
