Volunteer Service Project/Alternative to the Research PaperStudents electing this option must provide 8-10 hours of service at an approved non-for-profit agency/organization. The time donate must be completed over several days. Once you have selected the agency/organization you want to work with, you must contact them and make arrangements to begin volunteering. Upon completion of this project you must write a paper about your experience. Your paper should include the following elements:Volunteer Service Paper Check List____ 8-10 hours of service completed at a non-for-profit organization____ Cover page (Has, proper heading, the tile of the paper, student’s name, instructor’s name, name of class, date. All information is centered.)____ An official letter from the agency you volunteered at confirming the 8-10 hours of service. The letter must be on official letterhead and must indicate the dates, times and hours you volunteered. All hours must have been completed during the semester this course is taken.____ Write at least a 2 page description of what you expected to see, experience and learn prior to volunteering at the agency/organization you have selected. In this section you should include the name of the agency/organization you volunteered at, a description of how you found out about the organization, the reason you selected this organization, the organization’s mission statement (properly cite the source of the mission statement) and describe how you went about making arrangements to volunteer at the organization as well as the actual arrangements (schedule, duties etc). In addition, discuss what you think you might be doing at the organization and explain how your experiences might be relevant to Sociology. This section should be a final copy of your paper proposal.____ Write at least a 3-4 page description of your actual experience at the organization you volunteered at. You should present your experience and observation in the form of a journal and you must relate your experiences and observations to concepts we have been learning in this course. As part of your description you must use at least 3 sociological concepts and one sociological perspective. As you attend each volunteer session you should keep a journal of your experience in order to complete the requirements for this section of your paper. All concepts used as well as the perspective must be underlined, clearly defined and relevant to the experience or observation being described. You really need to describe exactly what you did, what your experience was like as well as any type of interaction you engaged in or observed.____ Evaluation and Recommendation: You need to evaluate your experience and suggest some recommendations for improving the program you worked with. You should use information gathered from an academic source to support your evaluation and/or recommendations. Hence it is important to select at least one academic research article relevant to the work you have done and/or the observations you have made. The article selected must validate your recommendations. This section of your paper should be comprised of 1-2 pages.____ The paper must be written using the APA writing style (page headings, documentation of sources etc)____ 12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins____ 1 academic research article (strongly recommend an academic journal article). The article used must be properly documented within the body of paper as well as on the reference page____ Concepts and the perspective used must be underlined, defined and relevant to your observations/experiences. I recommend using your textbook for the definitions – points will be deducted if the definitions are taken from dictionaries or any other source aside from your textbook.____ Sources used are properly cited and documented (in the body of the paper and on the reference page).____ Proper Parenthetical documentation, when used (this refers to quotes that are 4 or more sentences)____ Paper is double spaced and it is clearly divided into the three sections outlined above.____ Indent paragraphs and do not triple or quadruple space between paragraphs. If you are using Word 2007 make sure you remove the extra space between paragraphs____ Bibliography/Reference page (properly formatted).
