Psychology of music
Course description
This course covers the techniques for writing prose, in which student essays are evaluated, criticized, edited, and discussed. Provides instruction in the concepts and
methods of critical response and argumentation, and in the formulation, analysis, and presentation of original research in academic papers. (3 hr. lecture)

This course is designed for students whose academic or career objectives will benefit from strong, professional-level writing and research skills. The course will
focus on argumentation, critical response and advanced research. Students will read and write extensively on a week-to-week basis. The writing assignments will

expect to engage in both primary and secondary research on an issue of their interest that demands complex inquiry and problem-solving. A Summary of Requirements and

Course Outcome: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
assess and meet the reader’s need for clear, concise, complete and creative messages; choose an appropriate tone, style, and format; research, draft and complete
essays that use logic, precision, and relevant documentation to persuade, inform or explain the writer’s point of view.

Library Assignments / Research Assignment
At least one library or online research assignment will be assigned.
Class Policies
Because this is an intensive course, missing one week’s assignment is like missing two – three weeks in a regular course.
Warning! Nothing hurts your grade so much as failing to complete assignments.

Plagiarism in any written assignment earns an automatic “F.” Use quotation marks if you quote and document the quote (indicate where you got it).
Your papers should be your original work. Your work should not be completely made up of other sources whether you cite them or not. Papers should have no more
than 24% similarity(turnitin) from other sources .

Grading Criteria

The instructor will evaluate each student’s work and course performance on an individual basis. Students are encouraged to view grades as the equivalent of
professional evaluations. The instructor’s goal is to give each student fair, accurate, and (by extension) meaningful evaluations during the course and at the end of
the term. A student’s final grade will reflect the instructor’s view of how well the student succeeded in meeting the professional outcomes and objectives of the
course. The major writing assignments – i.e., the writing portfolio and the formal researched essay – will account for 75%-to-85% of a student’s final grade in the
course. The remaining percentage of a student’s grade will be based on in-class work (oral presentations, participation in workshops, etc.) and attendance.
You, and not I, will determine your final grade by means of the effort you put into studying, and into class and homework assignments. Method of Evaluation
Instructor’s evaluation will be based on the professionalism of your work; the timeliness of the completion of your assignments; the quality of your writing; accuracy
of information presented; preparedness for class. Written self-reflections and self-evaluation will provide information about your how well you have met the goals set
for the class.

Policies for Writing Assignments FORMATTING Unless otherwise indicated, all writing assignments must be typed in a Microsoft Word document.
Lines should be double-spaced. Pages should be numbered and contain ample margins on the top, bottom, and sides for corrections and remarks. In short, appearance is
important. Professionalism in formatting and presentation is expected. DUE DATES Assignments are due on time. Portfolio assignments cannot be submitted late (see the
portfolio guidelines for details). Major essay assignments may be accepted up to one week late (unless otherwise noted) but will be penalized half a letter grade (five
percentage points) for each class day late. Essays more than a week late will not be accepted without documentation verifying a prolonged, medical emergency. Final
essays due at the end of the term will not be accepted after the last day of class. Make sure to turn in all assignments. Any missing essay or other assignment will
receive a grade of “0.”
Also, be sure you follow directions carefully and submit the correct assignment. Assignments that do not answer the writing prompt will not be given any credit.
KEEPING COPIES OF ASSIGNED WORK To insure against loss of work, students should keep a copy of all writing assignments that are turned in. Until receiving official
notification of their final grades, students are required to keep their essays, writing assignments and portfolios, so that they can make them available to the
instructor for consultation or in case a grade inadvertently was not recorded. Attendance As this is an online class, you are required to check in at least twice a
week to ascertain updates on assignments, exams, exercises, lectures, resources, etc. Email Policies The instructor will try to respond to email inquiries within
forty-eight hours. Email should be reserved for brief comments, exchanges, questions, and clarifications about assignments. Matters that require lengthy exchanges and
explanations, such as the details of an assignment or series of assignments, should be taken up in person with the instructor during a scheduled appointment. All
email inquires of any urgency should include a phone number where the student can be reached. Writing Help Students may need help with their writing outside of the
classroom. The instructor will provide as much individual counseling and one-on-one instruction as possible. In addition, students can receive help from the FNU
Writing Lab. The Writing Lab is located on the 4th floor of the main campus.

Personal Essay Due: _____ ___________________________ 500 word essay
Write a personal essay describing your relationship to the idea of “responsibility.” Feel free to consider the following questions : What does it mean to be a
responsible human being? What do you feel responsible for in your life? What do you not feel responsible for? In what ways does your sense of responsibility extend to
issues outside of your own immediate environment (eg: beyond family or school)? What are the kinds of things you take seriously? You can be as creative in your
approach to this question as you wish.

Research Paper # 1 Due: __________ ______________________ 2-3 pages The writing and researching involved in this essay will give you a better sense of what research is
and how and why it is done. Class work will orient you to the FNC libraries and their various resources, and help you gain a better understanding of different types of
writing and publications.
Paper #1: A description of a CURRENT (within the last 12 months) topic or development in your field and an explanation of its significance to those outside of the
field.
Audience: Students new to your major who have a curiosity or research interest in this particular topic but no prior specialized knowledge of the topic; your English
3311 teacher Length: at least 2 to 3 pages, not counting references page There are two basic tasks to fulfill in this paper: – to describe this topic or development
as clearly and concisely as possible for the specified audience; in other words, to educate your audience about this topic as thoroughly as possible given the space
constraints. – to make a compelling, specific, and explicit case explaining obvious and not-so-obvious reasons this development is important to the world outside your
major. It may help you to think in terms of a little role-playing to imagine how this assignment might match real-world expectations: You are doing research or making
something closely related to this topic. Your company, department, or division needs funds to begin your research or project. To be awarded these funds, you need to go
in front of a group of people and provide them some necessary background as they make their decision. This could be an internal or external group: a board of
directors, a grant committee, a government agency, a venture capital firm, among other possibilities. You can’t assume (ever!) that every member of the group making
the funding decision is familiar with your topic. We need to understand and be responsible for the terminology we use given the audience for whom we write. This means
that you need to decide for yourself how much members of the specified audience already know about the topic and its terminology, and how much those student doesn’t
know. This will help you in turn decide what kind of vocabulary, detail, and tone will be appropriate for your writing. You’ll also need to decide what kind of
research is appropriate for the paper. Many of you will rely heavily on popular sources for this paper, though scholarly sources will be helpful or necessary in
certain cases. I will require in-text citations and a references page in the citation style of your choice. That references page should include a variety of source
material, so that your reader will understand that you are not simply repeating one or two sources without considering audience and purpose. You will receive a
provisional grade on this paper. If you choose to revise the paper, that provisional grade will be entirely replaced by the final grade.

Final Research Project #2 Due: _______ _________________________ 4-5 pages (not including cover page, abstract, or annotated bibliography) Using all the research and
writing skills you have acquired in this course you will be asked to write an 4-5 page research paper. This paper MUST include an annotated bibliography. Again you
will be asked to generate your own research topic.
