Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in Comparison

Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in Comparison

1.Compare and contrast the representation of gender roles in any three films from the syllabus. Some ideas, which you are free to pursue or ignore, include:
a.Compare masculinity in, say, a post-Yugoslav film, an interwar Polish or Czech film, and a late Socialist or post-Socialist film. How do you see the idealized image
of masculinity changing among your sources?
b.How do you see the feminine model(s) in the films of your choice? How are women “represented” and defined? What kind of agency are the female characters allowed by
the film narratives within each film’s socio-political context? How do they compare to the masculine roles in these films?
c.How are sex and the body represented in the films you have chosen? How do those representations reflect social mores, and how do you see traditions or gender
relations changing over time and across cultural space?2.Compare and contrast the representation of ethnic, racial or sexual difference, discrimination or identity
politics in any three films from the syllabus. Some ideas, which you are still free to pursue or ignore, include:
a.How do the filmmakers present the (ethnic/racial/sexual) majority’s attitude toward (ethnic/racial/sexual) minorities, and vice-versa? Do the films feed, reject, or
complicate (ethnic/racial/sexual) stereotypes? What can we infer about the filmmakers’ own attitudes from specific instances in the films?
b.What is the relationship between ethnicity, race, sexuality, class, and citizenship in these films? How are ethnic identities predictive of the kind of life one
might lead in their respective political environments?Once again, you are being asked to use your close-reading skills to support a position and to argue that position
through evidence. The films and texts supply the evidence, but the argument and its articulation belong to you. Your writing should be polished and well-edited. You
will not have the opportunity to revise this paper for a higher grade. If you are unsure of the quality of your prose or the efficacy of your use of evidence, please
make an appointment at the Sweetland Writing Center. The following guidelines are intended to assist you in writing a successful paper:
1.Provide pertinent context for each film and your discussion of the problematic in it.
2.While we expect you to discuss particular scenes, do not isolate the scenes as if they did not belong to a larger narrative. Instead, contextualize the scenes within
that larger narrative.
3.Find a way to introduce all the characters you discuss in your paper. Do not mention a character on p. 5 of your paper without previously saying anything about
her/him. Don’t make your reader guess.
4.Make sure your text and your topic are appropriate to the length of the paper.
5.State your thesis clearly in your opening paragraph.
6.Cite your source(s) using parenthetical citation (MLA style) or footnotes. Please observe these requirements:
1.Refer to at least three different readings from your reading list. You do not have to quote any of the readings directly, but you must demonstrate that you have read
them and understood them.
2.Your paper should be between 2000-2500 words, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or comparable type.
3.Please make sure that you have 1-inch margins on all sides.
4.Submit your paper through Canvas under “Assignments”
5.Under no circumstances should you borrow someone else’s language or ideas without proper attribution. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
