The Intro & Method part of a research paper
An introduction (3-4 pages). The introduction presents your topic and your rationale for selecting that topic. This section should include a formulation of your
study’s observational and interview focus that incorporates ideas and results from existing literature, and these sources must be referenced appropriately. This is
the introduction to your research paper, and as such ought to resemble the introductions that you are reading in your journal articles. In your introduction, you
should:
a) Introduce the reader to the topic.
b) Review the relevant literature. In your review of the literature, you must use at least THREE PRIMARY
sources. These primary sources should be peer-reviewed.
c) Present the purpose of the study and the research question (NOT a hypothesis)
Method section (3-4 pages). The method section describes the techniques by which you conducted your study, indicating the steps that you will take from start to
finish and giving a precise description of your techniques. This is where the rubber hits the road—you are essentially operationalizing your entire study in this
section. Describe your population. Include all that you plan to do with respect to your project. Please write in future (or in some cases, present) tense for the
first Intro/Method assignment; after you have collected your data and made revisions, you will change it to past (or in some cases, present) tense. In your method
section, you should describe:
a) Your setting/research site(s)
b) Your role as the researcher (outsider vs. insider) and issues of access (if any)
c) Your participants
d) Your procedure, including details about your observations and interviews
Please be sure to also include:
a) an APA-style reference page
b) An appendix (after the reference page) that lists your potential interview questions
c) The first page of each of your reference You may simply upload the entire .pdf file of each reference when you upload your assignment (you should name
your .pdf file with your first and last name so the TA can easily tell whose article it is). If you have references that are not in .pdf format, please talk to your
TA about the best way to get them the first page of these references.]
Note: When writing methods sections, it is tempting to avoid the hard work of writing a coherent narrative account and just start listing things. Resist the
temptation. Readers use methods sections to determine the internal and external validity of your research, so include detail, detail, detail. When in doubt, put it
in. Also, be sure to carefully proofread your assignment before turning it in!
Finally, please note that you may NOT begin collecting data until AFTER you have turned in your Intro/ Methods assignment and have gotten feedback on this assignment
from your TA. A major goal of this assignment, in addition to giving you feedback on your writing, is to give you feedback on your method, so you can have a solid
plan in place before data collection begins.
