Cultural Policy
Analyse a key issue in contemporary cultural policy, assessed by an essay of between 2,800-3,200 words. The essay is intended to be policy-focused and will be based on
a case study of a current issue in cultural policy. The essay shall bring together academic literature that you found through your own search that is relevant to
discuss a contemporary issue in the cultural policy field (e.g. budget cuts in arts funding, the shift towards social and economic objectives, the lack of diversity in
the cultural workforce, etc.). And that issue can be illustrated by one example or several to make your argument. It is better to focus on one key issue and discuss
this in-depth than raising several issues (however, sometimes they might be connected and then you can discuss those together: For example, cultural participation is
linked with cultural education and one can not get the one without the other). Policy-focused means it should be an issue that governments try to address (or choose
not to) and here you could bring in a case or several examples to discuss this policy issue. Policy-focused means that the essay should not be a theoretical discussion
on what cultural policy is but discuss for example how the budget cuts have affected the arts and culture and what it means for cultural policy and here you could
bring in how the UK government tries to stimulate private donations in the arts to incentivise arts and cultural organization to diversify their funding base. However,
it is up to you on which issue you want to focus on and what examples from which cultural policy-level (urban, regional and national) you want to discuss.Everything
based on something that you have read must be appropriately cited and referenced.
