U1L2D1 Culture or Child Abuse
Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen brought their daughter Trami to their family physician with the presenting complaint of lower abdominal pain. The nurse had the girl undress and
put on the hospital gown that she would wear during the doctor’s examination. As she did so, the nurse noticed circular red marks all over her abdomen; to her it
looked like Trami had been burned and beaten. Certain that she had witnessed the results of serious child abuse, she called the Department of Children and Families to
investigate her allegation. The parents vehemently denied any abuse and were of course quite upset at being accused. During her interview with the parents, all became
clear to the investigator. The Nguyens had used natural healing techniques called coining and cupping. In their culture it has long been believed that these techniques
draw toxins from the body and stimulate circulation.
Read the case study closely above and then answer each of the following questions:
• As a nurse, what would your nursing care plan goals and interventions consist of within the context of this case study?
• Were the parents’ decisions to use coining and cupping morally and legally wrong?
• What could you have done as a nurse to create a different outcome here?
