BMW Business Plan
.
You have been asked to use all of the information and insight you have gathered across these last few weeks to prepare a Business Plan that includes the following:
Current Company Overview and Blue Ocean Strategy
Think/Rethink (briefly and at a high level) the answers to these prior questions:
• who is (and who are they not) the company
• Create and detail a proposed Blue Ocean strategy you believe has the greatest chance of success, noting:
o where/how this market space is unique and uncontested?
o what is the new competitive advantage this strategy will create?
o specifically – how this strategy will separate them from the current ‘Red Ocean’ in which they swim?
o what is the corporate-level and business-level position this strategy assumes, and how will that connect to and build the strategy
High-level Environmental Analysis
Recap (again briefly and at a high level) the key environmental elements, specifically noting
• which elements are the most important – and why?
• how these elements may/will change over the next 5 years – and how that will set the stage for the moves necessary in your proposed business plan?
Market Overview and Customer Analysis
In the new market space:
• who are the new anticipated/proposed customers
o what do customers want?
o how will the company deliver what customers desire?
• who would be the eventual competitors – knowing that Blue Oceans don’t stay blue forever?
o how would these competitors likely respond?
o what kind of threat would these competitors eventually pose?
Structural Execution Steps
In order to execute this strategy, and connect the structure to the proposed strategy:
• should the company pursue related or unrelated diversification … or any diversification at all
• is there an international expansion component – and how will that be managed as part of the strategic process?
• structure be mechanistic or organic – or some combination of each (keeping the key elements of the strategy/structure link in mind) – be sure to support your
selection with that strategy/structure linkare any changes in leadership needed short term
o what type of departmentalization would be needed
o the level of centralization/decentralization and any additional coordinating mechanisms necessary
o the processes/procedures to create, capture, leverage, and utilize organizational knowledge throughout this transition/learning process
•
• in the long-term, what might be some of the necessary characteristics for the next CEO to ensure that this plan doesn’t end when/should the current CEO step
down
Resource Allocation Priorities and Financial Impact
In order to ensure the success of the plan, appropriate resources must be provided for the execution. To make this happen,
• from a resource allocation point of view, at a very high level, where are/should be the budgetary priorities
• what is the anticipated short-term and long-term financial impact of this proposal (i.e.: increases in revenue, reduction of costs, etc.)
Proposal Analysis and Conclusion
In your professional opinion:
• assuming the successful execution of all of the points noted above, what are the chances (as a percentage) of success
• what are three things that the company can do to ensure the plan’s success (or reduce any roadblocks) to increase these chances of success
Prepare this formally written comprehensive plan to the CEO (not a dumping in of the questions with brief paragraphs or bullet pointed lists as answers), focusing on
the content of the business plan and the flow of/connections between the elements in the plan.
Concentrate on the content of the plan rather than the length or the format – but DO prepare a formally written plan and not merely a series of bullet points below
addressing the questions above.
