Section 3: Systems Design/Personal Contribution

Product Selection Committee Structure:

The entire committee, where I was included, devised a structure subsequently expressed in a document. This document being referred to seeks to satisfy the class when we chose the product so as a member of the team the first point that I really stressed on was the feasibility of the product so we can produce the quantity that we are willing to sell, more over there is one more important thing to be mentioned which is the product has to be made from wood. My personal job at the group was to come up with three different structures to create the list.

Type of wood that we are going to use.

The class has been divided into five different groups to make a research about particular product. Josh, saad and I were assigned to take over the bottle opener, more over we were divided into sup groups so saad and I took the job of finding the prices for the material that we are going to use to process the bottle opener. Moreover I found that if we can present a prototype of the idea it would be a good thing toward the idea, so I bout piece of wood and some tools to cut it, at the next day we present the idea by showing the class what we did.

Product Selection

This document specifically shows the pros and cons of the wooden bottle carrier. The importance of this document in the political and social setup of the company is its capacity to outline the products being voted upon. As a result, it is expected that it will largely contribute to the product selected.

Maintenance Schedule

The group where I was assigned to determine the maintenance schedule for the shop’s machines. This document we came up with completely satisfies the production and organizational needs of the company since it created an accurate and reliable timeline which shows when certain machines may require maintenance.  The reason as to why I was added in this group is to assist them, because I am in the material handling sup group and we don’t have work assigned yet. Technically, I helped determine the fact that all maintenance needs could be encapsulated in a quick daily maintenance since there would be no machine which requires regular substantive maintenance. (Maher Alsheakh)

Process Flow Group

My indispensable role in the process flow group was to help Hannah and Jarret finalize the AutoCad drawings delegated to them. Jarret made an attempt to communicate ideas regarding the process flow in the shop (because he knew how the root of the process going to be). This idea, I think, is really required in the determination of how the group was going to make a further setup on the material handling inside the shop (that’s why Joseph and I were there). There was a walkthrough done in the lab to generate the possible constraints in brining materials inside the premises.

2/19 Report

Joseph and I made a group report anent the material handling and procurement on February 19. In the report is an account of answers to various questions that Hannah, Joseph and I propounded on the material procurement. The report likewise indicates the potential problem that confronted Joseph and I in the lab walkthrough previously intimated. Lastly, the said report had a picture outline of the path where to take materials going insider the laboratory.

Facility Layout

The first task I did regarding the facility layout was that I gave Hannah a hand by taking the necessary measurements of the electrical box. The laboratory safety expert from Kansas State had told us prior that the previous lab setup blocked access to the box, making this aspect of the activity very critical. In addressing this complaint, several production members and I moved the machines in their desired location according to the lay out that has been designed earlier.

Facility Layout Drawing

I helped Hannah in updating the facility layout drawing last March 3 to include the changes made the week before that. Subsequently, additional electrical boxes accompanied with measurements were added to the drawing. The importance of this document is its ability to help in highlighting the process flow of various materials within the lab itself. Some of the obstacles that we faced the vacuum hoses length, and the electrical supply position.

Product fixtures

On March 5, the team where I was included in was tasked to create the fixture needed to produce each product and making the products easy to be created. The direct benefit of this fixture to is to get accurate measurements for the product. (The understanding of the tolerant)

Section 4: Personal Insights

Class Voting

This is a well-known issue that must be addressed: the way we vote in class must be modified or changed. But the issue here is the voting process which runs the tendency of dragging for too long. It proves too awkward just to neglect. Further, this “call to vote” method we adopted is not a wise method and quite flimsy in the context of a class-setting. Taking this in consideration, I believe that the group coming up with this policy-determining process should have made a better plan in the method of voting, so the class might have a more immediate task-oriented run. Lowering heads was I do not really know how to describe it, we are college students if we do not know how to respect each other opinion of selecting or choosing at the real job we won’t lower our head to select or elect someone.

Election

I was thinking to be in a position at the company, but I don’t think I am going to win this, because my relation with my class mate to be just a friends, so they do not really know me. However I did not like the way that choosing any one just because he is famous, moreover I thought Andy deserve to be the president as well as Bric.

Company Structure

In the decision regarding the company structure, there is a realization certain groups of people are equipped with the mature which is the knowledge of how to operate the suction that they would fill, confidents is necessary at this point because it would help them to acheave the goal with the help of the entire team

Safety presentation

I have to say that safety presentation was somewhat a frustration, since it lacked the greatness I would have preferred. There was no in-depth presentations and ideas, just basics which are given to begin with. This was likewise reflected in the quiz that did not test us regarding the required understanding in lab safety. I would prefer taking us to the lab and do the presentation down there, moreover illustrating or acting down there as if there is an accident already occur.

Career Fair Day

This was handled poorly. The class should have been rescheduled or cancelled. This day is too important for students (me included) who have yet to clinch either a full-time job or an internship. I understand that the schedule might be hectic on the days immediately preceding and succeeding the career fair day. But there should have been circumspection in scheduling times where too-important decisions regarding the company should be made. A great number of the class was gone that day and it could have cost the entire activity. There is really a need to have a proper means of communication and planning, just to allow the class to adjust especially in times where a great number of classes are going to be gone.

Material Handling

My role in this aspect of the entire activity was not enjoying. The reason for this is perhaps its nature as being unrelated to production. Thus, I think it would not be remiss to think of it as a too mundane and dull assignment. Advancements in this area had not reached the level of possibility because a good knowledge underlying the shop layout and process flow is essential to have a good idea as to what constitutes and to have the know-hows on setting up solid material handling guidelines. However, I was really looking for joining the marketing department, because I would think that I will be a good asset to them regarding my relation with the international students around the area.

Evaluations

The first evaluations were poorly handled. To be honest, they did not really show anything. Evaluating people without working with them was not a good idea. In fact, a number of departments have yet to accomplish their respective tasks. Now how would evaluation in that context render a believable result? As a further observation, the metrics which serves as points to evaluate people must be simplified. Three should suffice: attitude, effort in executing the job and the last one for the deliverables. It is therefore highly recommended that the evaluation be changed.

Material Obtaining

The company poorly run the operation here. True, we chose the company because of the cheaper prices they offer on the table. But the issue that gravely confronted me is the hunch that they might not be reliable in their services. Due to this imminent fear of the company giving dissatisfaction. We had should consider other company in case of anything, however we can solve some of these problems by buying from local dealers in Manhattan.  We did buy some of the materials from a local dealer and I am the one how paid for the material and I gave the president of the company the respite. Also I gave the company a hand drill to help the operation group solving the tiny drilling activity rather than screwing by their hand.

Training

First of all, I would like express my fascination on how Jarret and Skyler executed their job in running the training sessions. It was very hands on and informative – conducive to learning in other words. The training was so enriching that I personally felt that I am already capacitated to become a production supervisor with just an hour (or so) of training. The way Skyler and Jarret conducted training should be a blueprint for future training.

Facility Layout

This drew lots of energy from me – it was so exhausting. The task of moving around different kinds of machines for hours completely drained me. All machines sported a different kind of heavy, to the point that some of them are literally immovable. But that notwithstanding, it bears stressing that I was instrumental in the decision making process to move all machines to comply with the layout our group designed. We had to do this to make sure that the safety guy would see no issue in the layout. In conclusion, I think the facility layout was successful and gave enough room for our company’s development, notwithstanding the physical feat attached thereto. It was worth it.

Spreadsheet/Production team

There is good harmony within the production team. Their satisfactory job had already reached the extent of them completing projects on a regular basis. I attribute much of their success to Nathan’s skill as a leader that nourished the talent pool of their team. His skill as a leader is highlighted by his style of open communication with his team, in telling them what should be completed at the most opportune time with the ideas on how to execute the same expeditiously.  He also regularly gives us production schedules which are carefully crafted to help the entire team focus on their respective tasks, I think he did a really good job thanks to him.
