World Civilization I

Students will write a 2-3 page paper (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font) that describes the day in the life of a figure from ancient history. These papers
should describe in detail the life of a fictional person. Students can give their person a name, a family, a wife or husband, kids or no kids, pets or no companions—be
creative! Students are describing a day in this person’s life while telling as much about their lives as possible, relying upon information about the culture and time
period.

This is, essentially, a research project, and there are some research guidelines students must follow. First, students must use five or more sources for their papers.
Sources must be from scholarly sources—scholarly journals, books, websites, etc. I will provide students with a list of acceptable databases available through the TCC
library website on Blackboard (under the Content Area Heading “Project Resources”). Wikipedia DOES NOT count as a source—go beyond this! Second, the person the student
chooses to write about must come from a time and place we will cover in class. Examples include a Neolithic hunter, an ancient Mesopotamian woman, a Shang dynasty
warrior, a Greek philosopher, or a European peasant. If a student would like to choose another person not on the list (assuming this person would have lived during the
time periods we cover in class), he/she needs to clear this with me first. Third, students must remember to cite their sources within their papers! These papers must
mention something about family, the political structure that affects the fictional person, and what economic realities face this person. The grading rubric is as
follows:

5 points for each of the five required sources 25 points

Spelling and Grammar 10 points

Choosing to write about a person within the required
Timeframe 5 points

Proper (MLA) citation format 5 points

Works Cited 5 points

Gives pertinent facts about social life of
an historical figure 25 points

Incorporates historical data into a narrative 25 points
