Week 2 First Message 1 – Simplifying Polynomials
(Respond to Question or Post)
You might have heard you can only combine like terms. Why is this? What if a classmate didn’t believe you? What if a classmate said that 2x + 1 = 3x for all x? How could you show that this is true or not true?

Scientific Notation
(Respond to Question or Post)
In chapter 5, the textbook covers scientific notation (p. 409).
What would be the value of expressing something like the national debt in scientific notation? What information would be lost in such a usage? Is that important? Explain why or why not.

Re: Scientific Notation
(Respond to Question or Post)
The value for the national debt at the time that I check was 1.93 × 10?1;?3; or 19,287,697,098,433. The value to expressing the number this way is that it simpler to say or write. The downside would be that most people would not understand the meaning of it. There is also the fact that once you convert it back its a number that is not precise to the original number is rounded. This is important when dealing with anything that needs to be precise as the scientific notation does not represent the true value of the original number. It is just a simplified way of expressing the original number but is not precise.

Re: Week 2 First Message 1 – Simplifying Polynomials
(Respond to Question or Post)
Combining like terms is like combining apples to apples and oranges to oranges. When combining the terms, they are combined by the like terms to the same power. If the classmate did not believe me, I would show them the following example using x=2 in the equation.
My classmate’s answer would be when x=2:
2x+1=3x
2(2)+1=3(2)
4+1=6 which is not a correct answer.
