Introduction to Professional Nursing

This week we will explore dimensions of professional nursing, in terms of how the profession has developed, the definition of a profession, and what constitutes professional nursing care? We will look at several topics that have and continue to impact the development of professional nursing and current professional practice.
Post on the following questions, using sources to support and inform your replies (see the grading rubric for original post requirements):
1. Briefly discuss two events from the history of nursing that support the need for BSN level education.
2. Based on the SUNY Delhi student learning outcomes, as well as the AACN Essentials for BSN practice and the IOM Nursing Education Brief, define two skills required for nursing practice that provide the foundation for professional practice (example: Evidence based practice, liberal arts education, information technology, etc.)
3. Discuss two concepts of professional nursing practice and provide two examples of these concepts in primary patient care (see Hood, Box 1-1 and Figure 1-1, pp. 4-5).
4. Professions are defined by specific characteristics. Discuss two of the characteristics listed by Hood (2014) that are part of professional nursing (Table 1-3, p.16) and how you could apply them in your nursing practice.
Respond to three or more postings of your colleagues, addressing such things as:
– Expanding concepts of professional nursing practice
– How might your work expectations evolve, while studying for your BSN?
– What other aspects of professional nursing can you envision embracing, based upon your peer’s comments?
Remember the basic rules of posting:
1. Emotion and intent clearly come through in this medium.
2. Be courteous, non-judgmental, and supportive, even when you disagree.
3. Postings must have substance: “I agree” or “Good posting” are examples of postings that do not meet this criteria and will not count as a required posting.
4. Typing in all caps is considered shouting, so please don’t SHOUT.
5. Always check the grading rubric as you reply to ensure you meet all criterion and earn all the points possible.
Note: You must include citations to support what you write and they must be in APA format. At least one should be another source besides your texts and readings, and should follow the basic rules of not more than 5 years old and be peer-reviewed sources (journals).
