Unit 7 Theories of Organizations and Environments

Introduction

Earlier theories of leadership and management viewed organizations as closed systems, often with a heroic model of leadership where an individual, essentially without constraints, was free to do as he or she wished. Over time, theories have evolved and recognized that organizations are open systems, subject to the dynamic and unpredictable forces of the communities in which they exist. It has also become quite accepted that one role of the leader is to monitor the external environment, controlling it as best as possible, adapting to it when he or she cannot, while simultaneously remaining cognizant that every decision made in a crisis or routine situation has potential repercussions elsewhere within the organization. Successful leaders will recognize this, working as best they can to interact with internal and external actors in an open, collaborative, and ethical manner.

Objectives

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

1. Analyze how a leader can be effective in a crisis situation.

2. Assess the skills of a leader and identify the challenges faced in this role.

3. Compare and contrast the positive and negative aspects of a specific model of leadership theory in day-to-day operations and large scale situation management.

4. Describe the technological and human challenges involving communications that are often faced during a crisis.

5. Evaluate decisions made by a leader in terms of communication strategies, ethical behavior, and outcomes.

6. Examine the leader’s role in media relations during a crisis.
