You are required to complete a question below. You are required to write one essay
(2,000 words +/-10%).
Question
Assume that you are a manager of the strategy or operation division in bulk carriers
(or tankers or liners or specialised) shipping company. The main business of your
company is to transport cargoes between Northwest Europe (Rotterdam port,
Hamburg port, Antwerp Port and so on) and East Asia (e.g. Shanghai port, Busan
port, Hong Kong port, Kobe port and so on). The CEO in your company is keen to
reduce the overall transport costs, because the freight rate of the shipping market is
very low at the moment. Accordingly, the CEO asked you to create a taskforce team
in order to conduct a feasibility of using the Northern Sea Route (NSR), although
currently their ships have been using the Suez Canal Route (SCR).
– Assume that you are now acting like a consultant for your CEO. Choose a
route (e.g. Rotterdam-Shanghai, Rotterdam-Busan, or Rotterdam-Hong Kong
port) and a specific ship (e.g. Iron ore carriers: 50,000dwt, or container ship:
12,000TEU, or tanker: 10,000dwt). Importantly, assume that there is no
limitation of vessel size due to depth. You can choose either 1 or 2 for your
individual report.
1. In this circumstance, compare the NSR with SCR in an economic
manner. The cost components may include various costs such as
capital cost, depreciation cost, NSR fee, Ice pilot fee, Suez Canal fee,
crew cost, maintenance cost, insurance cost, fuel cost, port dues,
and so on. Also compare them in terms of sailing time and its
consequences for the shipping lines’ profits and vessel capacity. In
conclusion, you need to indicate which route is more attractive in
terms of reducing costs for your shipping company.
2. Identify the challenges, advantages, disadvantages, security & safety
issues, and environmental issues ((e.g. International Code for Ships
Operating in Polar Waters: (Polar code)) by comparing using both
NSR and SCR routes. In conclusion, you need to indicate which route
is more attractive in terms of considering various aspects such as
advantages, security& safety and environmental issues.
