Discuss the main themes in the study of self and identity in Japan
Topic: Discuss the main themes in the study of self and identity in Japan that we have explored, drawing upon and synthesizing the readings attached. In your answer, you should identify not only main themes, but you should focus on exploring how concepts of self and identity in Japan have been developed in the book, The Long Defeat: Cultural Trauma, Memory, and Identity in Japan, and identify and discuss major problems you believe to exist in how the idea of self or identity has been conceptualized in the academic literature. What are positive and negative points related to the manner in which a Japanese sense of self has been constructed in the book?
This is a very broad question. You must focus your answer and develop a tightly constructed argument in which you are making a point. Clarity of argument is fundamental, but you also must use readings we have covered (and others if you wish) to support your argument. You are not allowed to use readings beyond those attached. All references used must be cited in an appropriate manner (I don’t care which method you use, but it must be complete). This includes all the readings attached. If you wish, you may focus on critiquing a single author/reading from the class, but if you do this, you should bring in other readings to support your argument. Creativity counts. I don’t want you to just list main points; try to come up with a creative and interesting argument—be a bit daring.
