Principles of Policing
THESE ARE ONLY FOR DISCUSSION QUESTIONS EACH OF THESE SHOULD BE ANSWERED WITH A ONLY A PARAGRAPH OR TWO!!
1. In the “History of Modern Policing” reading for this week, the article lists several “Pellian Principles of Policing”. Which of these are the police – in general –
most effective at? Why? What factors lead them to be more effective in this particular responsibility than the other areas? What factors work against them to make them
less effective in the other areas?
2. Discretion is considered the hallmark of a police officer’s powers in the U.S. In discussing officer discretion, the text says, “The police combine their knowledge
with the array of verbal and nonverbal information that [are present] each unique situation” to make their decisions about the proper response, if any. What are some
of these other circumstances that play into an officer’s decision? Describe both verbal and non-verbal factors that influence an officer’s sense of a situation. Do you
believe an officer’s discretion should be limited more than it is? Why or why not?
3. Read the list of “Sir Robert Peel’s Nine Principles of Law Enforcement” at the following link: https://www.durham.police.uk/About-
Us/Documents/Peels_Principles_Of_Law_Enforcement.pdf. Which of these principles still holds true today? Any of them? All of them? Why do you feel that they are
important today given that these principles were written 200+ years ago when the world was a very different place?
