From the syllabus: For each of the larger readings, students will be assigned character analyses. These will be
approximately 2 ½ to 3 pages each, analyzing that character in relation to self­discovery—assignments will be
tailored to the specific characters. These should be treated as formal writing, but they should not use outside
sources. These are NOT book reports or summaries or broad discussion not rooted in the text. They will
examine/compare how 2 or 3 episodes show growth within the character.
Analyze Siddhartha’s self discovery through the book, examining at least 2 episodes that include different
characters. Suggestions for characters to look at would be Siddhartha’s father, Govinda, the Samanas, the
Buddha, Kamala, Kamaswami, Vasudeva, and his son.
