Analyze the influence of European economic, political, and cultural forces in both enabling the domination (both formal and informal) of African and Asian territories in the nineteenth century, and in shaping the successful independence movements against European rule that emerged in these territories in the twentieth century. Questions to consider: Did European powers sow the seeds of their own demise through their colonial practices, and if so, how? Also, to what extent did independence movements in the Global South adopt “western” ideas and methods to pursue their cause, and to what extent did they develop their own strategies and ideas? ** This must be a long essay which is: Long Essay Requirements for Organization, Analysis, Evidence Organization: The essay must have an introduction, with a thesis statement at the end of the introduction. The thesis statement conveys your main argument for your essay, which would be your stance on the essay prompt. The essay must have three to four substantive body paragraphs that convey your argument. The essay must have a conclusion Analysis: The essay must feature historical analysis (not just facts) supported by concrete historical evidence. Analysis means that all of the evidence you use is clearly and specifically connected to proving and shedding light on your thesis statement. You aren’t just putting down related information for its own sake. The topic sentences and concluding sentences of your paragraphs are great places for you to show analysis. Evidence: The selected evidence must demonstrate (correctly!) the breadth (geographic and change over time) of your knowledge. Breadth falls into two areas. One is geographic, which means that your answer might vary somewhat for the Islamic empires vs. China, for example, or for the specific European state or entity in the area (say government presence, or joint stock company presence). The other is change over time. This means that your answer must take into consideration changes in the period from 1450 to 1750. The selected evidence must demonstrate the depth (key words, key terms) of your knowledge. This means, you will refer (correctly!) to specific names, specific events, specific books or texts, specific ideas, etc. Your exam evidence should be drawn from our class materials, including the textbook, primary sources, classroom discussion notes, and my PowerPoints, not from random google searches on the topics raised in the questions. Where appropriate, strive to include evidence from the primary source readings in your essay, in addition to evidence from the textbook readings, lecture, and discussion.
