Critical Evaluation
A critical evaluation requires that you analyze another person’s text and assess its validity and/or effectiveness. To do this you must first think about the rhetorical situation of the text you are evaluating: What is the purpose of the text or other piece of work you have set out to evaluate? What agenda is the creator of the piece attempting to forward? Does it make sense to you? Why or why not? The object of this exercise is to test the validity or effectiveness of the work you are analyzing, not to create your own argument on the topic. If you disagree with the argument or interpretation, what is it about it that makes it fail? If you find it successful, what is it about the piece that contributes the most to its success?

Assignment: Write a critical evaluation of one of the following texts. I recommend that you make reference to at least one of the other texts we have read to illustrate your argument:

Mark Hertsgaard, “Is You Stomach Too Full” (McKibben 135-163)
Naomi Klein, “Climate Rage” (McKibben 239-48)
Kingsolver, “Called Home” (from Animal, Vegetable, Miracle)
Shiva, “Climate Change and Agriculture” (Global Warming Reader 365-70)
David Arthur Cleveland, “What Can Local Food Do?” (link in course materials)

Keep in mind that you must present a single argument — one that is analytical and not merely descriptive — and all of your points must connect back to this original thesis. The goal is to be selective rather than listing every fact or detail contained within the text. While writing, assume that your reader is familiar with the text you are analyzing and proceed accordingly.

The final version of this essay should be around three pages in length. Like all your written work for this class, this paper must be typed, double-spaced with one-inch margins. And I prefer that you use a twelve point font or something that is close to the size of the print that I have used on this document. Fasten the pages of each draft together with a single staple in the upper, left-hand corner. I will provide you with a folder to keep your drafts together.
