Case Study
The assessed case study will test students’ research skills, problem solving abilities, adaptability and initiative, as well as the student’s critical use of relevant research and theoretical perspectives based on the collection and submission of empirical material.
Focus on a specific case related to issues of political communication. Your case might concern: ‘the politics of media’; ‘media as politics’; ‘media in politics’.
Case studies can focus on political communication in specific countries, regions attending to national or international events.
Case studies can focus on a specific medium (e.g. newspapers, TV, online, etc.), political party, politician, political organization, election campaign, political event etc.
You could analyse a particular discourse or representation in media (e.g. identity, immigration, race, gender, or social class, minorities, international politics etc.).
After choosing a ‘case’ you must research it thoroughly. Present the case in terms of its background, context, and political significance.
You must then draw on theoretical concepts covered in the module to investigative and discuss your case.
Please note that the theoretical drawings should be a part of the case studies. Although you need the theoretical contextualisation, this is not just a theoretical essay. You need to provide a balance of analysis and theoretical discussions.
Students are expected to draw on broadly defined literature from the following areas of the module:
political economy, media and democracy (freedom of speech, public sphere, personal politics, inequality);
political discourse analysis (language, representation, discourse, text, genre, identity, social critique);
political communication in the digital age (social communication, new public sphere, interactivity, crowd persuasion, decentralisation of power).
Journalistic sources may feature in your case study, but we are expecting to see a rigorous application of academic literature and course materials
