Guidance on the Supervision Process for the MSc IB Dissertation
Essential requirements for the Dissertation
1. Dissertations must be on an international business or international management topic, i.e. the project must centre on issues connected to cross-frontier strategies and/or business operations.
2. Dissertations cannot use primary data collected by use by students of instruments such as surveys, interviews or focus groups.
3. Dissertations are subject to a 15,000 word limit.
Conditions that must be complied with
Dissertations must have an International Business/International Management (IB/IM) Focus – It is essential that the written project comply with this requirement.
The proposal must be on a topic in international business and/or international management. To fulfil this condition the research must involve business and management issues that involve cross-frontier activities.
Thus, a proposal on – Why do some Indian cities have large concentrations of firms in the software industry? – is not an international business/international management topic because it does not specifically involve cross-frontier business and management issues. A proposal along the lines of – Why do foreign firms in the software industry tend to concentrate in some Indian cities? – does involve cross-frontier business and management issues and is therefore is an acceptable proposal.
The proposal should be centred on matters that are strongly connected to the issues and problems that arise in the strategy and management of cross-frontier activities. Proposals should not be centred on wide ranging political, economic or social implications to host and home locations of the activities of MNCs. Where a Dissertation considers these wider issues, they should be related to the implications for the strategy and management of cross-frontier business transactions.
Dissertations must only use secondary data
To avoid problems with obtaining ethical approval and more importantly to make the Dissertation feasible (within the time and financial constraints that face students) the use of primary data from interviews or questionnaires is prohibited. Dissertations may make use of archival data from firms and other agencies that is publicly available and therefore is in effect secondary data.
Research Proposals
Students that have not submitted a research proposal for feedback as part of the taught part of the module should prepared one and send it to their supervisors before the first meeting.
Students that have submitted a research proposal and received feedback on it should send the proposal with the feedback to the supervisor before the first meeting.
Research proposals should include: a provisional title, a short literature review, draft research objective and research questions, a short methodology on how they plan to answer your research questions. Advice on what should be included in the research proposal can be found on the Vital site for the module.
NB Students may change the topic, approach, research objectives etc in their research proposal at any stage. Students however are strongly advised that radical changes to research proposals is likely to lead to problems. Moreover, students are advised that after the supervisor has approved the research proposal she/he is under no obligation to provide advice to students on modifications to radically changed research proposals. Students are therefore advised to agree as soon as possible with their supervisor the suitability of their research proposal. Students are further advised that they should only alter their agreed research proposal if the supervisor suggests, or agrees with suggestions from the student, that significant modifications to the research proposal is likely to improve the quality of the Dissertation. Students are however free to do as they wish. The job of the supervisor is to provide advice to students about the folly of making radical changes to agreed research proposals without the agreement and support of the supervisor. Undertaking radical changes to research proposals at a late stage in the preparation of the Dissertation is likely to be unwise and should only be undertaken after careful consideration of the advice from the supervisor.
Guidance on the Supervision Process
Arrangements will be made between the supervisor and the student to determine the timing and content of meetings. The methods and timing of meetings should be agreed by the supervisor and students at the first meeting. The means of conducting meetings (joint meetings with other supervisees, Skype meetings, email correspondence etc) is at the discretion of the supervisor, with the agreements of the students.
Students should have opportunity to discuss with supervisors, by whatever means is agreed by the student and the supervisor, the following major issues –
a) The suitability of the research objective and research questions and the feasibility of the proposed methodological approach to provide satisfactory answers to research questions.
b) The planned structure of the dissertation and its suitability to provide a coherent and clear reason for the research objective and research questions, a good defence of the methodology to answer the research questions, a suitable place for discussion of the results that provides a clear set of answers to the research questions and sections on implications of the results for such things as theory, private and public policy and managerial implications. The components and details on what is contained in the implications section are likely to depend on the nature of the dissertation.
c) Specific issues connected to refining the research questions and the methodology, help in understanding what the results of the research mean in terms of answers to research questions and in assessing the implications of the findings.
The normal School rules prevail about numbers of meetings etc as those that govern all dissertations on the MSc programme.
Reading Drafts
Supervisors will not read and comment on drafts of the Dissertation.
Help with English and on the Format for the Dissertation
Supervisors are not responsible for ensuring that the Dissertation is written in good English and that it conforms to good practice in terms of format and referencing etc. If students have problems with writing in good English, they should seek help from the English Language Centre. Students should follow the guidance on format and referencing etc contained in the School advice given for the 15000 word SBA project.
