Sustainable tourism development and planning
Order Description

In 2007, the DCMS launched Winning: A Tourism Strategy for 2012 and
Beyond whose stated aims included; to spread the benefits of tourism and improve sustainability. Further, as part of its London Tourism Vision 2006-16, the London Development Agency also identified tourism as part of its overall strategy to develop London as a sustainable and inclusive city (London Tourism Action Plan 2009-13: p.33).

Your action plan will consist of a preliminary appraisal of the challenges and opportunities facing those parts of East London (specify) that currently receive little or no benefit from the existing concentrations of tourism in the central and western parts of the capital, as well as the more recent areas of growth around the Olympic Park and Royal Docks.

Your task is to advise the relevant boroughs and GLA on the strategic priorities and focus it should adopt in order to maximises the contribution of tourism to the sustainable economic development of one or more of these East London boroughs, and the conservation of its historic cultural, ecological and community assets. The strategy should be formulated in the light of the desire of the GLA and local London boroughs to raise the profile and standing of tourism in these parts whilst creating employment and raising standards of living.
• A brief outline of the provincial economic context and existing state of tourism development in East London/relevant boroughs.

• Identify key challenges for enhancing competitiveness and sustainability (with specific reference to the terms of reference above).

• Identify where and how existing and/or new tourism ‘offer’ may be enhanced and developed in the light of the above.
• Identify and explain how these proposals might enable the creation of local businesses, create employment and reduce income inequalities/poverty (whilst also ensuring that any growth takes place within the environmental, infrastructural and socio-cultural limits of these densely populated areas).
• Contextualise and explain your proposals with due regard to the regulatory environment (tourism policy; land use and environmental planning).
• Explain and reflect on the sustainability implications of the specific proposals (incl. stakeholder identification) and how these will be addressed.
