American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) approved organizations

There are a variety of American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) approved organizations including the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) that will assist an advanced practice nurse (APN) in obtaining the required 75 continuing education units (CEU) required for renewal of their license and certification. When evaluating if contact hours are accredited or approved by ANCC it is important to look for continuing nursing education (CNE) or continuing medical education (CME) that are approved for CNE or CME hours through an accredited organization. One way of obtaining CEU credits that does not include attending a workshop, seminar or convention is to go back to school. According to the ANCC, “1 semester hour is equal to 15 CEU credits as long as the course is relevant to the specialty.” (ANCC, 2017).
Two programs that approved by the ANCC for completion of CEU’s include OnCourse Learning and the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD). OnCourse Learning is an online program that provides hundreds of CEU’s as well as job postings, educational opportunities, new and events. Once you create an account it will store all of your completed CEU’s so that they are easy to retrieve and they will also email you any suggestions for additional CEU’s that you may need or are looking to complete prior to the recertification deadline. (OnCourse Learning, 2017). The second organization, ANPD, “inspires members to excel by providing educational services, networking, advocacy and research to support the unique needs of nursing professional development practitioners.” (ANPD, 2017). Both programs help an advanced practice nurse (APN) meet their CEU requirements for renewal of their license and certification.

One approved ANCC CEU provider I found is called netce.com and they claim to have been an ANCC accredited provider since 1939 (“NetCE”, n.d.). They offer online courses on a wide variety of topics. In many states CEUs can be obtained upon completion of each course. You simply select a course, read the material, then purchase and submit the evaluations. They offer individual courses, package deals, and even an option to customize your own group package. You can customize a group package by choosing courses from their entire library and then selecting the specific number of hours you need. They have over 1000 hours available, including pharmacology, and base the price on the number of hours selected. Their materials are also available to print and read for free, but a payment must be made to receive CEUs.
The second approved ANCC CEU provider that I found is called NPACE.org (“NPACE”, n.d.). They claim to utilize NPs to create their programs and conduct most of their conferences. They also offer online CEUs through a partnership with mycme.com. Mycme.com offers many different packages that cover a wide variety of topics. They have also recently updated their courses and offer new materials in areas such as obesity, STIs, and arthritis drugs. These courses must be paid for in advance of accessing the materials, however, they offer a free app for most devices which makes their courses very convenient.
ANCC has a review manual to prepare for the certification exam. You can also pay an additional fee and complete a short activity to earn 30.29 contact hours after purchasing the materials. Finally, it also appears that research in the form of a completed dissertation, thesis, or graduate-level scholarly project can also be applied to the required ANCC CEU requirements (“2017 certification renewal requirements”, 2017).
