A woman enters the Victoria University Dermal Therapy Teaching Clinic presenting with the following.
She notes that she has suffered acne breakouts on and off for the last few years, and now that her
breakouts are under control, she is concerned about the scarring that remains. Upon questioning, she
notes that she is of African-American background, never burns and always tans with ease.

Research and discuss the above case study with reference to knowledge
gained in Advanced Laser and Light 1.
– Explain the possible aetiology and pathogenesis of the hyperpigmented macules
– Discuss a method for treating the hyperpigmented macules with a laser or light device and
develop a treatment plan accordingly
– Discuss the wound healing processes that follows post procedure
– Discuss the risks and potential complications following the chosen procedure
– Briefly discuss how favourable outcomes for this procedure have been achieved due to recent
research and changes in practice
