Students will be Choose a contemporary artist (1990-Current) CHOOSE THE Photographer is my interest and should select an image or two images to compare and contrast (from the same artist) for discussion in class. You should prepare a powerpoint containing the image/images but not include any other text on the slides. The aim of this exercise is to critically analyse the works, making reference to how the artist conveys meaning and what they are trying to say to the viewer through their use of subject matter and other formal techniques (use of colour, line, composition, subject matter etc). You should also look at the social and historical context that the work was created in. You can make reference to biographical details of the artist ONLY if need be – try to avoid it. These are not biographies of the artist but critical discussions of the work and what contribution it makes to our understanding of art in general. You must write the artist, title of the piece (in italics) and the date it was produced under or next to the image. You should refer where possible to the reading for that week OR other readings as part of your research in gathering information about the works. Finally, the idea is to include the class in discussion so you should think of preparing a question for the end of your talk that might engage students.
