PART 1:

Written report

The head of construction of the organization to whom you report to has advised you that she is preparing a report to the board of the organization for the purposes of a presentation to a potential investor for the design and construction of a tall building.

You have been directed to prepare a professional written report not exceeding 4500 words which is to include the following:

(ACCORDING TO AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS)

1. The general nature of tall buildings and their design considerations
2. The relevance of applied structural loads and structural systems

Other factors that is important in the design of tall buildings:
• A title for your report
• An Executive summary
• Relevant diagrams

PART 2:

Case Study

Your immediate supervisor has directed you to carry out an assessment of a case study of a tall building of your choice (with restrictions, refer below) the purpose of which is to demonstrate the following:

1. An overview of the systems adopted by the design team and the construction contractor including structural, facade, services and temporary systems.

2. Your assessment will need to explain the possible reasons why each system was implemented into the design and construction.
It may be necessary to make assumptions based on your knowledge of each system combined with your practical thinking.

3. Clearly demonstrate the various structural considerations that defines the case study of your choice, such considerations needs to include:

(ACCORDING TO AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS)

• foundations of the structure
• external (skeletal) configuration
• internal (skeletal) configuration
• various key ‘forces’ that the building is subjected to and how the design team has catered for the various key ‘forces’
• Relevant Codes and Standards (AUSTRALIAN Codes & Standards)

Restrictions:

The following cases cannot be used for your case study:

• Eureka Tower
• Rialto Towers
• A’Beckett St Apartments
• 350 William St
• Empire State Building
• Burj Khalifa (known as Burj Dubai prior to its inauguration)
1. Your case study must represent a building which has a minimum of 30 stories above ground level
2. The assignment is to be submitted in report format and referenced in accordance to Harvard Referencing.
3. Appropriately referenced diagrams should be used to support your analysis
