Case Study Assignment Latino Focus
You are the Director of Evidence Based Nursing Practice at a medium sized hospital in a Louisiana city. The hospital also has several satellite clinics that provide women’s health services in the city and surrounding areas. The make-up of the population served is 62% White, 32% Black, 6% Latino and 2% other. The Clinical Coordinator of Women’s Health Services informed you that nurses report an increase in patients asking about genetic screening for breast cancer. Latino patients in particular, are expressing concerns about the purpose of these tests and distrust about how the results will be used. The Clinical Coordinator believes that widespread news reports about genetic testing and related treatment are triggering these questions. She is also concerned that the front-line nursing staff who are receiving questions are not equally knowledgeable about genetic testing and are not providing consistent information. These concerns were confirmed by a survey of the nurses on the topic.
You decide to develop an educational program (i.e., Train the Trainer) for nurses and key community members who will be involved in an outreach program to educate Latino women about genetic testing for breast cancer. Your program will include the following:

Cultural issues to be considered in educating the selected population about genomics and genetic testing. Consider past failures and success with this population. Who should be included in the Train the Trainer program? Are there any strategies that may work better than others? 4. Community partners to enhance outreach efforts to reach your target audience. Identify at least one community partner. 5. Ethical, legal, socio-economic issues related to translating genomics in health care. Be sure to include issues related to: a. Informed consent b. Confidentiality 6. Plan for evaluating the program’s success, including: a. Specific outcomes to measure your intervention. b. A data collection plan c. Data analysis plan
