Reflection on Nursing Using the 5Rs Framework
Introduction
For a nursing practice to be success, it is a brilliant idea to focus on both the healing and curing process and improvise ways of reflecting on the whole process to evaluate the success of the nursing process as a whole. One of the methods that are critical to reflecting on the healing and curing process in a health sector is the 5Rs Framework (Carrington & Selva, 2010). The use of the 5Rs Framework in reflecting on the healing and curing processes has been essential in ensuring that the entire nursing profession is reviewed and improved appropriately (Ryan & Ryan, 2013). Therefore, this paper seeks to provide an outline of an analysis of the use of a 5Rs Framework in reflecting on a teaching and a learning process between a nurse and the patients on how to take care of their wounds after dressing and treatments. There will be some literature and rationales that will be applied in support of the ideas used in reflecting on the whole process.
Reflecting on the Healing and Curing Processes
Reflecting on the learning process is an important component for a nurse who has the mandate of instructing the patients on how to take care of their wounds. Reflection is the process of forming a thought or an idea that may be as a result of meditation. When considering the learning and teaching processes, nurses should examine their experiences to develop ideas specific to their objectives, like clinical education to patients (Martschinke et al., 2004). Reflective practice is an important component that can and needs to be taught in a clear manner that is direct, thoughtful and patient by applying some personal reflection-in-action in interpreting and improving the learning process (Beamish, Bryer & Davies, 2006). Reflection, mainly the self-reflection component is linked to the transformational learning (Ryan, 2012). As explained by Thomas (2005, March) the most prominent social theorists have been emphasizing on the enduring necessity of domination within the contemporary society, and he maintains that Ryan theorist was right in maintaining that people are always self-reflective that can deepen their conceptualization of the things around. Beamish et al. (2006) maintains that based on the understanding of self and the people around them; individuals can act to change the conditions of the kind of environment they live in and also influence the lives of the people around them within their society. For example, when instructing patients on the best ways and methods of taking care of their wounds, a nurse enables the clients to have a different look at the problem they face and take good care of themselves. Therefore, the reflection of the learning process will be useful for a nurse to improve the service delivery and increase the patient’s understandability of the concepts of clinical education. The use of the 5Rs framework is useful in reviewing the previous sessions and adjusting to improve for both the patients’ and the nurse’s weak areas (Hoban & Nielsen, 2010).
A 5Rs Framework Reflection on My Nursing Practice
The application of the 5Rs Framework in the teaching and learning in the clinical education within hospitals is an important component. Most of the nurses have been getting into the nursing profession experiencing some levels of difficulties on how to understand their patients and the roles that are expected of them (Wall et al., 2005). Therefore, the use of a 5Rs reflective framework will help in solving some of the difficulties that are experienced by some new nurses and even assist in improving the quality of the service delivery for the real nurses. The framework has assisted in strengthening the transfer of knowledge that helps in reinforcing the dominant relationships between health institutions and the communities within which they exist (Singh et al., 2005). The application of an appropriate method such as the 5Rs in the learning and teaching programs within heath facilities help medics understand their assumptions through the use of a self-reflective and the self-criticism (Ellis et al., 2004).
When it comes to teaching my patients how to use the 5Rs to reflect on their understandability of the instructions given in hospitals, it will be significant to enlighten them on the importance of the process. After taking some years in the provision of some little structures for the nurses and patients reflection Motta, Boldrini and Cattaneo (2012) decided to improvise some questions that seek to foster the process of thinking and give appropriate feedback. Some of the samples of the questions included: ‘what are some of your major strengths as a nurse?’, ‘give a summary of your significant fundamental insights into the nursing profession,’ ‘In which ways can you improve theories contributing to the nursing practice?’ Medics have been encouraged to reflect on these issues at different stages of the pre-service programs. Motta et al. (2012) holds that dialoging between patients and nurses is a critical component that helps in boosting the success of the whole healing and treatment processes. On the other hand, Bader, (2007) reported that a small scale study that involved the early childhood education was successful due to the involvement of a variety of guided reflective methods that included the 5Rs Framework. The data of the Bader’s survey indicated that some of the methods were useful than others in aiding reflection. Therefore, skills of observation are things that can be taught and needs to be taught to improve the service delivery in the nursing profession by allowing them an opportunity improve on the previous mistakes and weaknesses. Therefore, the development of reflective practice needs skilled facilitation and necessary support (Cockburn & Ryan, 2015). Critical reflections are an essential bit of an education system that facilitates the medics’ and patients’ opportunities to engage in the learning and curing processes.
An excellent 5Rs reflection framework can hold great emancipatory potentials as most learning conducted by new nurses are always concerning the patients after and before the services delivery for them to check whether there is a noticeable variation in them (Mainali et al., 2015). The framework helps both the nurses and their patients review their conceptualization of the whole process of curing and healing and how best the wounds should be handled to initiate a quicker healing. Conceptualization is noticed when there is an opportunity to reflect on the past performances, and 5Rs framework gives the best chance for reflection. Giving descriptions of the recent happenings and commenting on the reactions and feelings witnessed together with the integration of the observations on the nature of the previous meeting give a good chance to rectify and improve on the weak areas and make the healing process a bit fast (Wangerian, 2007, p.135). Therefore, the 5Rs reflection gives the scaffolding for the thought for both the medics and the patients on the healing and curing process of a wound. Through an active and engagement on a thoughtful learning process between a client and a nurse, both the patient and the nurse are made to develop the capacity to reflect and critically question the assumptions used during the whole process. In using the 5Rs reflective framework, I will facilitate my analysis of the patients’ conditions, and this will increase my experience in articulating the procedures that are necessary for a faster healing process. For my clients, the use of 5Rs Framework will facilitate their enlightenment and improve their understandability of the status and how to take good care of themselves to enable them heal and get back to their normal lives.
The 5Rs framework is accredited for it assist clients to go beyond the description and instructions they get from the health facilities and apply them in real life situation to better their status (Bain et al., 2002). Bain et al. (2002) holds that the 5Rs is useful in assessing the levels and rate of the healing process after dealing with the same client for a period. It helps a nurse understand the components of the reflection, and this enhances their understanding of their profession and improves on their service delivery to the patients. The 5Rs framework’s name was derived from the five constituents that make up the scale (Bain et al., 2002). In adopting the structure, I will be combining the reporting and responding components to make the 5Rs become a 4Rs framework. The four elements will help me connect my self-reflection of my nursing practice and healing processes of the clients. It will also enhance my ideological critiques and challenge the status quo that comes with transformational learning.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Evaluating a Nursing Session
The use of the 5Rs framework in the healing and curing process may come with some strengths and weaknesses. Grossman (2009) was one of the scholars who identified some strengths of the reflective framework; as he argued that it is essential in ensuring that a nurse has got the qualities of giving the best service to the clients. As a nurse works his way into differentiated types of clients from different backgrounds, he should be sure to consider his way into the whole process as well. Ovens and Tinning (2009) maintained that a nurse needs to be reflective in their practicing for them to build strong partnership with their clients. The use of the 5Rs reflective framework also provides a self-assessing opportunity to a nurse and even the patients, and this makes them check on the quality of their engagement in the healing and curing processes. The 5Rs reflective framework is praised for the good work it does in inquiring on the nursing profession, and it also facilitates the conceptualization of the roles of the profession (McGuire, Lay & Peter, 2009). Therefore, an individual can apply the 5Rs framework to reflect on his service delivery and improve the specified areas (Ryan, 2013). Therefore, this technique can help me as a nurse to improve on my service delivery and reflect on the previous errors I ever made to ensure that my next sessions with my clients become a success.
While considering the weaknesses of the using the 5Rs reflective framework, it has been severals of criticism that makes it not reliable as it faults the work for the lack of precision and clarity (Nash & Sacre, 2009). Ying et al. (2005) argued that the analysis of the 5Rs ignores some of the critical features of the reflection. Jarvis and Quick (2005) realized that the use of the 5Rs is unreflective while Davies (2011) downplayed the theoretical and quality of the framework. Davies (2011) also criticized the use of 5Rs reflective as unachievable. He claims that ensuring that all the 5Rs are considered and dealt with in a single curing session is tiresome hence the process is just complicating the whole program of the nursing profession. Dien et al. (2012) also argued that the phenomenological philosophy is unattainable as it impossible for a nurse to distance himself from his lived situation to reflect the moment of his nursing practice. Therefore, to achieve the real reflection, a nurse like me needs to step out of his situation and conduct a retrospective reflection (Jarvis & Quick, 2005). Given the levels of criticism that many scholars are raising on the reliability of the framework and the manner in which it is put to practice (Dien et al., 2012). Therefore, there is a need to come up with a more critical and reflexive exploration of the reflection that will be able to analyze the nursing practice. For instance, working on the curing and healing in nursing profession has to involve an approach whereby the use of reflective practice is just but a synthesis of reflection to address the weaknesses of the 5Rs framework. In the approach, the philosophical roots of the 5Rs are formed in a phenomenology and even the critical theory.
Many scholars have argued against the level of reliability of the reflective framework. For there to be adherence to the reflective structure, the reflection itself needs need to have a high-level security on the techniques applied or the general thinking (Grossman, 2009). Therefore, the 5Rs framework facilitates the understanding of the nursing profession in a manner that enables some new and more empowering practices and ideas. The use of the 5Rs incorporates experimentation that risks the process towards getting modified in a way that would lead the service delivery of a nurse towards a fluctuating and possibly a contradicting rhythm (Ellis et al., 2004). The use of the terms reflection, reflexivity, and the critical reflection are mostly confusing and have been wrongly assumed to mean one and the same thing. Ellis et al. (2004) maintained that thinking of the three concepts develops a continuum. Therefore, it will be a bit difficult for my patients to understand how to apply the reflective framework in the healing process of a wound and even to a nurse of my caliber to put the approach action actually as it is a bit confusing.
Measures to Improve on a Future Nursing Session
For there to be some improvements in the nursing profession through the use of the 5Rs framework, there are some areas that need improvements. For example, for a patient suffering from a wound, there are five overlapping variants of reflexivity of the reflection that is a critical component of the 5Rs reflective framework. The five overlapping options include the self-reflection that is at the core: then the introspection; the inter-subjective reflection; the mutual collaboration; the social critique and the ironic deconstruction (Hoban & Nielsen, 2010). In the future curing and healing process of a patient suffering from a wound, in case I will be using these variants, they will be useful in distinguishing the types of reflection that I will be engaging in reflecting on my services delivery to my clients. For example, a nurse and a patient suffering from a wound may seek to solve facilitate the healing process by collaboratively using a 5Rs reflective framework. The nurse may think of coercive institutional practices and look on how to manage the imbalances that might occur in the healing process. Therefore, in as much as the 5Rs Framework is of importance to the medics in different departments, both the strengths and weaknesses of the approach must be taken into considerations. For the process to function effectively, we need to address the challenges that make it difficult to apply the technique because it is still an essential component that can improve the service delivery program between in the nursing profession.
Many scholars have criticized the use of the 5Rs framework but in case the components that are criticized are readdressed, it can be the best way to ensure that the healing and curing process are successful in most instances. The technique helps in making the nursing profession more enjoyable as it seeks to increase the conceptualization of the concepts that are learned and used by the nurses in curing their client’s illnesses. An essential bit of the application of the 5Rs reflective framework is that it gives room for an improvement in areas of that there were errors. The opportunity to reflect on the nursing practice enables both the parties to identify the areas that they feel unsatisfied with and do the necessary improvements. Therefore, doing away with the technique due to the challenges and weaknesses that it faces might deny the health sector the opportunity to enjoy the benefits that come with its application.
