Course Work 2

Submit a report which provides answers to Questions 5 and 6.

Learning Outcome 4.1
4.1: Recognise a variety of complex waveforms and explain how they are produced from sinusoidal
waveforms

1) Construct the circuit shown below in Multisim (or something similar) and connect an
oscilloscope across the resistor. Using 100V and 50Hz for the fundamental (phase angle of your choice),
add two different harmonic sources to produce similar waveforms to those shown below, by altering the
frequencies, magnitudes and phase angles of the AC voltage sources. In your assignment include a clear
screen print of the two circuits and voltages simulated; state the frequency, magnitude and phase
angles used in each case for all the voltage sources; and briefly explain how you arrived at those
values.
Waveform A
Waveform B
Learning Outcomes 4.2 and 4.3
4.2: Apply AC theory to solve problems on R, L, C circuits and components
4.3: Apply AC theory to solve problems involving transformers

2) The circuit shown below is for a typical ELV fluorescent lamp fitting, which operates at 24V
50Hz. Assuming the fluorescent tube has an operating resistance of 39Ω and an ideal transformer,
calculate:

a. the turns ratio

b. the current supplied by the source

c. the impedance seen at the supply (HV side)

d. the power dissipated by the tube

e. the operating power factor of the fitting
