Practice Issue
Statistics indicates that most people have expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of life of the end-of-life care despite adequately planning for it (Prakash, 2010). The perceived unreliability of healthcare systems in treating symptoms sheds light on the experiences in terminal care. In most cases, patients are informed of the incapability of the diagnoses to treat their terminal ailments.* Nurses may experience frustrations, helplessness, and failure in treating their dying patients. Factors related to the exacerbation of nurse distress include poor communication skills, inadequate training, unrealistic expectations, and the fear of dying*.
Aim of Project and PICOT
The research proposal aims to address the lack of planning that exists within the healthcare system, devise an evidence-based education plan to implement teaching other health professionals and develop an educational program implementable in enabling healthcare providers, especially nurses to acquire essential skills in advanced care planning. Thus, the PICOT question is: Do nurses who care for terminally-ill patients in a hospital (P), after participating in an educational program on end-of-life care (I) versus nurses who do not participate in an educational program on end-of-life care(C) help patients develop an end-of-life care plan more frequently (O) over a three month period (T)?
Significance of the Issue
Variations in outcomes of patients bring into light the ratings and the level of patient care in a particular hospital. Studies have found out that patients are more likely to suffer complication in lowly graded hospitals compared to those with higher ratings (Crosson & Cassalino, 2015). The same case applies to this study. Hospitals that depict inadequateness in planning and nurses who lack the advanced care planning skills may fail to help sick patients, especially those suffering chronic diseases (Crosson & Cassalino, 2015). Higher costs are associated with the treatment of individuals with chronic diseases compared to those that do not have them*. Implementing an advanced care system for patients means an increase in cost for patients in receiving treatment (Al-Abri & Al-Balushi, 2014).
