Order Description
An investigation of alcohol-related harm incidence in Glasgow among the young population, with suggestive interventions and monitoring and evaluation methods.

You are a public health specialist working in an area with high levels of social deprivation. At a local community meeting, members of the community highlighted their concerns about the suspected high levels of various health conditions, including alcohol abuse, HIV/AIDS, coronary heart disease and diabetes, in their geographical area. You have been asked to choose and investigate one of these issues further and propose intervention(s) to support the community to address your chosen issue.

In an essay of 3000 words, critically analyse and evaluate ways in which epidemiological methods (including epidemiologic study designs and investigations) would be used to gather and interpret knowledge in relation to your chosen health issue and support the planning and implementation of a public health and social action initiative.
Marking Criteria:

– Evidence of attention to purpose
– Extent to which the content is underpinned by critical analysis and evaluation of relevant literature
– Demonstration of a developed, reasoned argument
– Application and synthesis of relevant theory into practice settings
– Overall presentation, including structure, fluency, coherence and referencing

Areas that should be covered:

– Critical ways and evaluate in which epidemiological studies and investigations can be used in to gather and interpret knowledge in this area and support the planning and implementation of a new public health and social action initiative.
– Chosen strategy is appropriate for the community described.
– Arguments tend to be more described in a generic sense as opposed to applied to the community in question, and that could be answered by different epidemiological designs; for example the differences between experimental and observational study designs and the specific role of the chosen design (for example R.C.Ts) in answering questions relating to the effectiveness of interventions.
Structure: 1. Introduction: Provide background and justification in critically setting out the rationale for the chosen topic and population (alcohol abuse in Glasgow among the young population)/highlighting the public health importance of the chosen health condition for example, using Epidemiological information and statistics (prevalence and incidence among the young population), health consequences and complications associated with the condition, economic and social impact on society/aim of the essay to critically analyze and evaluate ways in which epidemiological methods (including epidemiological study designs and investigations) would be used to gather knowledge in relation to alcohol abuse (health issue) and support planning and implementation of a public health and social action initiative.

2. Body – In depth and critical analysis in:

a. Methods used to gather information (measures of determining the frequency of health outcomes, and associated risk factors and health consequences, both primary and secondary data sources to use, relevant measures of association for comparing population groups, critical discussion of methods to be used for identifying relevant interventions taking into account the different types of epidemiologic study design, the hierarchy of evidence, characteristics and views and perspectives of stakeholder referrer to health needs assessment).
b. Specify and critically discuss your intervention, implementation of the intervention and procedures and methods by theoretical and relevant scientific evidence.
c. Critical discussion of epidemiological methods to be used for monitoring and evaluation of the intervention in the primary and secondary health outcome for example, think about the process and impact and outcome evaluations; also indicators or outcome measures to be used.

3. Conclusion: Restate the aim and purpose, brief summary of the methods and processes use to in identifying, implementing and evaluating intervention, conclusion must be founded and informed by the problem and rationale and proposed intervention and methods.
