This week you will complete the rapid critical appraisal process and your Evaluation Table. Next week you will synthesize the evidence and create the Synthesis Tables.
The Rapid Appraisal (RCA) Checklists should be used for this process. They can be found in the Appendices of your text, Evidence-based Practice in Nursing & Healthcare as well as in Week 3 Overview.
The RCA checklists and Evaluation Table in Word for you to fill out can be found in Week 3 Overview section.
Depending upon the approach you are taking to the literature search and appraisal process, you may be appraising the studies as you go. If not, the step you must complete this week is to critically appraise the studies you found using the appropriate RCA tool and complete your Evaluation Table.
• Demonstrate synthesis of the knowledge and skills acquired in preceding graduate nursing core and specialty curriculum content.
• Integrate this synthesis in the creation of a scholarly project of either an evidenced-based practice proposal or a research proposal that generates new nursing knowledge.
• Incorporate evidence-based research methods, scientific writing, and critical thinking demonstrative of graduate level professional nursing practice.
This week you completed the rapid critical appraisal process, adding the “keeper studies” to your finalized Evaluation Table. You had time to reflect on what worked and what could have been done more efficiently to search and appraise research studies.
Assignment 1: Discussion
As you work on your capstone project proposal, you may want to share your progress with your peers and instructor and seek or provide guidance or share insights. By Tuesday, December 22, 2015, go to the Discussion Area and post responses to the discussion question. All responses should be posted to the appropriate topic in this Discussion Area. It is important to support what you say with relevant citations in the APA format from both the course materials and outside resources. Include the South University online library in your research activities utilizing not only the nursing resource database, but also those pertaining to education, business, and human resources.
Before the end of the week, comment on the responses of at least two other students by agreeing with a point of view, asking pertinent questions, adding to the responses by including information from other sources, or respectfully challenging a point of view, supported by references to other sources. Be objective, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language. All comments should be posted to the appropriate topic in this Discussion Area.
Discussion Question
Discuss your experience completing the rapid critical appraisal process.
• Was it really “rapid” or was it more of a laborious process?
• Did reading the abstract help you make quick decisions about including or excluding the study?
• What worked best for you in terms of the approach you decided to use to complete the appraisal and Evaluation Table? What didn’t work?
• Post any questions or concerns you may have and provide feedback and recommendations to your classmates. Working together and sharing search strategies is very helpful.
Discussion completed
Completing the rapid critical appraisal of the sources I was going to use for my project was somehow challenging. The process was not rapid as such. It was rather laborious. I had to systematically and carefully look at various research articles in order to ensure that they were trustworthy in terms of the information they contained (Raphael, Waterworth & Gott, 2014). I was also required to evaluate the sources in order to ensure that they were relevant and could be used in a given context.
Reading the abstracts of the sources I had found helped me to make important decisions on whether I could include or exclude them from the study. An abstract tends to provide a summary of the main content of an article (Pesut et al., 2015). Therefore, by reading it, one can have an idea of the information an article contains. The abstracts helped me to choose articles that contained the relevant information that I required in order to complete my project.
In the approach that I used to complete the appraisal and evaluation table, what worked well for me is that I was able to find several articles that dealt with the topic of my study (Pesut et al., 2015). Therefore, it was not difficult to complete the table. However, there is something that did not work well for me in the process. Many of the articles that I came across were not current. A good number of them were written between five to ten years ago. This can raise questions about their relevance.
One of my main concerns about the project is whether it is really answering the research question. Another concern is how the project will contribute to the nursing practice in general (Fourie & Meyer, 2014). I recommend that in their projects, my classmates should ensure that they remain within the limits of the research question. They should also try to understand how their projects will contribute to their nursing practices.
