Academic (research) essay
This essay is meant to inspire students to think critically about the methodologies being used within the various presentations. The Asia 301 workshops is
strategically designed to expose students a multi disciplinary view of Asian Studies at WSU, affords them opportunities engage with new and interesting research, and
encourages them to explore their own interests within these various methods. The essay must be 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced, and have 1” margins and Times New
Roman 12. Paper must be uploaded to the “Academic Essay Drop Box” in the course space on Blackboard by April 4 (11:55pm).
1. Choose two of the following events from our program:
• Dr. Liu Xinmin, “When the West Meets the East in a Garden: the Chinese Garden Aesthetics and the English Landscape Movement in 18th Century.”
• Dr. Bhatawadekar’s presentation “Philo-selfie”
• Dr. Glazebrook’s presentation “Winds of Change: When Climate Mitigation and Community Development Come to Blows”
• The documentary film “Hafu”
2. Briefly summarize and describe the presentation or movie: What was the primary argument, point, or claim? What main pieces of evidence, or examples did the
speakers offer to support the primary argument?
3. Analyze them: What methodology did you see used in the presentations you chose? (Refer to the folder posted in our Blackboard course space for background and
basic descriptions of research methodologies within the various disciplines.) What did you see as strengths of the methodology used? What could be challenges of this
particular methodology? Note: You may also have noticed aspects of different methodologies used. Please include this in your analysis.
4. Explore the topic and/or methodology you found most interesting: Using our library search engines, CHOOSE ONE of the presentations or movies from the workshop
and find a recently published after 2005, peer-reviewed, scholarly article that is similar or closely connected to the topic and/or methodology. Students will need to
provide a full citation and link to their article with their submission.
5. Make some connections: Students will need to briefly summarize their found article, including descriptions of its primary argument and the evidence and/or
examples the author presents. Then, describe the research methodology used in this scholarly article and examine how it compares to those of the presentations or film
from our Asia 301 program.
6. Reflect: What have you learned from this assignment? In a few sentences, offer any insight or perspective you may have gained from this exercise.
