Assessment tasks
• Assessment One: Critical Review
Select topics presented in the course so far, and explain why this research is important. In each response, to be 400 words each, you should cover the following:
• Why does this research matter? (approx. 300 words)
o What are the social, political, and cultural impacts for this research?
o Why is this study important for criminological research?
• Where does this research need to go? (approx. 100 words)
o What is the next step?
Answers should be made in short responses, and use referencing where required, in line with the school’s style. Some research beyond the course may be required, and can be drawn from other materials covered in subjects from your degree.
You will be assessed on the following:
• Has the student demonstrated analytical and research skills?
• Has the student evaluated current approaches in the field?
• Has the student demonstrated an understanding of how criminology shapes, and is shaped by, these issues?
Your responses should reflect a comprehension of research approaches/findings. By demonstrating:
1. why it is important
2. the impact it may/does have, and
3. future directions for research,
you will illustrate this comprehension. Please check the rubric to see what I’m looking for when assessing.
This assessment is very flexible, and there are no explicit research topic you have to engage with. Any material covered in lectures/readings can be engaged with as your ‘topic’. For example, if you choose to discuss CCTV, you may wish to explore what ‘my research’ looked at, or what Rob Carr’s research looks at.
Research beyond the course is not expected. How you engage with materials within the course is important (e.g. if looking at The Conversation article, you may wish to explore some of those secondary sources as to how/why the arguments are made).
For the ‘where does this research need to go’ question, this is designed to assess how you can recognise how:
a) research projects may not be flawed, but will have limitations (due to practicality of conducting research)
b) research can be built on
c) this section does not require references (though you can still cite things to justify your statements)
P.S Choose CCTV as an example, we discuss why research on this topic is important and can use conversation article as an example of findings , Like discuss why the research is important then relate ‘The Conversation ‘s articles’’ to why it is important etc.
