Z, a student contacted your law office. She wishes to pursue a complaint in small claims court against York University. Z was enrolled in graduate preparatory course

at York University. She claims that the course did not meet her expectations. Z claims that the course was a waste of time and that this was due lack of time and

effort instructor invested in the course,, hence the standards in the course suffered. Z says now that the course is over she still does not feel she got what she paid

for, to prepare her further education at the graduate level in Canada. Z is upset because she has been trying to figure out the best way to deal with this issue. Some

people have told her that she should complain to the university and have the teacher dealt with by the university as a disciplinary matter. Others have told her that

since she paid for the course, on the basis that she would be provided a certain standard of teaching and learning, that the university has not honoured its agreement

with Zola and has broken its promise. Zola explained to our firm’s intake worker that the teacher was never prepared for class, cancelled classes up to 60 % of the

time and was never accessible to students for questions. Zola stated that as a US citizen from Florida, she paid international student fees and had to fund her own

travel to Canada, accommodation and immigration fees. She feels that she did not get what she paid for at all. At the same time, Zola says it is important also to

ensure that the teacher is not able to carry on teaching in this substandard manner and so would like to know how to ensure that the administration of the university

is made aware of this instructor.
