Pathophysiological Processes Project
PURPOSE
This project is an investigation of a health condition that is not covered in the course. It will allow for
the expansion of knowledge and the ability to generalize larger concepts to a variety of health
conditions.
COURSE OUTCOMES
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
1. Explain the pathophysiologic processes of select health conditions. (PO1)
2. Predict clinical manifestations and complications of select disease processes. (PO 1, 8)
3. Correlate lifestyle, environmental, and other influences with changes in levels of wellness.
(PO 1, 7)
DUE DATE: Please see course calendar for due dates.
TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE: 100
REQUIREMENTS:
Select a disease process that is not covered in this course. Please select from any of the body
systems that are covered in the course, the hematologic system, or reproductive systems. Please
do not select from the body systems that you will be covering in NR 282 (gastrointestinal,
endocrine, musculoskeletal, neurosensory, and renal). Feel free to have your faculty member
approve your selection.
PREPARING THE PAPER:
Please include the following in your paper: body system with name of disease, etiology,
pathophysiological process, clinical manifestations and complications, diagnostics, and affected
health patterns which list specific impact. Please remember to use APA style for your paper.

DIRECTIONS AND GRADING CRITERIA
Category Points Description
Introduction of
disease
10 Provide a brief description of the disease/disorder. This part of the paper
should not be limited to the definition of the disease. Include epidemiology
as appropriate.
Etiology 10 Identify common causes and risk factors for the disease, to include age,
gender, environmental, genetic, and lifestyle.
Pathophysiological
processes
20 Describe how the disease begins from the cause and the mechanisms of
the disease that give rise to signs and symptoms. Remember that
pathophysiology should be on a cellular level. Include information related
the body’s attempts to overcome the disease as applicable.
Clinical
Manifestations &
Complications
15 Describe the physical signs and symptoms that are important in
considering the presence of the disease. Describe significant and common
complications associated with the disease if left untreated.
Diagnostics 10 Describe common laboratory and diagnostic tests used to determine the
presence of the disease. Provide information on significant findings for
these diagnostic studies associated with the disease.
Affected Health
Patterns with
Specific Impact
25 Identify at least three (3) health patterns affected by the disease. Describe
how the disease specifically impacts that health pattern.
APA Style and
Organization
10 The assignment should be typed and presented in APA format. This
includes an APA title, page and references with in-text citations. Spelling
and grammar will be evaluated with this assignment.
