Discussion: Checking the Pulse

This has likely been a whirlwind five weeks–you are on the brink of completing your first course in the RN-BSN program. During the first week, you submitted a plan for managing challenges. In this discussion, share a little bit about your progress on meeting expected and unexpected challenges in completing this course. How have you modified your plan to be successful?

This is also an opportunity to provide feedback to SCF Nursing faculty on how well we are doing in supporting your success. What activities in this class have been most valuable to your learning? The least? In what ways can we improve the overall support for newly-enrolled RN-BSN students?

Your feedback is valuable in order to continually assess and improve the quality of our education programs and student supports. Sharing your experiences with other students may support a stronger sense of community (especially for online learners).

Like many other practitioners in the healthcare field, nurses have to assume multiple roles as they address the needs of patients. To the patients, for example, act as caregivers, counselors and client advocates. To the clients and their families, nurses act as teachers by providing relevant health care education (Hood, 2013). While at workplace, nurses are colleagues to other team members and they may sometimes be managers or supervisors if given coordination tasks. These roles are complex and in order to perform them effectively, nurses must be committed to long-life learning. Nevertheless, the additional roles assumed when one becomes a nurse means that their lifestyle is completely altered (Hood, 2013). This paper constitutes my personal assessment of my strengths and challenges in relationship to the skills required for success.
Reading, listening and speaking constitute the key components of an effective learning experience. Unfortunately, finding time to read is one of the challenges that I face as a student nurse. Similarly, students have to listen to faculty members in educational settings as they share their insights in nursing expertise (Hood, 2013). Responses to the faculty members have to be well-thought of and logically structured. This is why nursing programs feature mandatory class presentations to ensure that the students develop public speaking skills. For me, fear has prevented me from asking questions. On this, I plan to be taking notes as I read, highlighting important points, and taking breaks when I feel exhausted. I will also be freer to ask questions as a way of avoiding mistakes in both class and clinical settings.
Writing is another skill that is considered critical for nursing career success. Writing skills are required for documentation of client’s information, policy development, communication, and article publications (Hood, 2013). What I consider difficult in writing is narrowing topics to fit assignment criteria and gathering relevant information when the information resources are broad. The solution for this would be to first understand the purpose of a reading, set aside sufficient time for assignments and consult with trusted friends for opinions.
Organizational skills, which form the third set of skills for success for nurses, are necessary for balancing professional and personal life. In this case, organizational skills enable nurses to manage their personal time, manage information and refine test-taking capabilities. Like never before, nurses are finding themselves sorting and evaluating enormous amounts of information (Hood, 2013). Staying abreast of the latest the latest discoveries and information is a major challenge for almost all nurses, including myself. This remains a challenge despite the fact that remaining current with information is an important determinant of success. On this, I would ensure that I sort information as soon as it comes to avoid backlog. In addition, I would subscribe to online newsletters to ensure that I keep stay current on new discoveries and developments in the nursing practice.
Personal time management skills, which also fall under organizational skills, are necessary for personal development and reduction of pressure. Successful nurses, in this case, must be able to effectively allocate their free time to other activities that are important in life (Hood, 2013). This could be meeting friends, being with the family or attending to personal projects. I find personal time management an easy task for me because I always ensure that my time utilization patterns match with my needs and goals. In this case, I will have to arrange my personal tasks in order of their importance and urgency, and then begin with the tasks that top in the priority matrix.
