Coal River Valley Farm:
The Property
A 18 hectare vineyard established in 1990 with 10 hectares planted with vines including Riesling, Pinot Noir plus a small number of experimental rows of vines. The property has no working winery or cellar door and the grapes are currently under contract to be sold to a well-known winery in the local area. Until recently this arrangement has provided a comfortable income for the family but the price of grapes has fallen plus the costs of hiring labour to pick the grapes has increased and the family are looking to supplement their income.
The property also contains a four bedroomed & two bath roomed home and a machinery shed that used to be a small winery. Running through the property is a creek plus several dams that provide ample water for the grapes. The property has a 0.25 hectare fenced vegetable garden and orchard. The property enjoys broad rural views and is easily accessed via a partially sealed road from the main road and well maintained unsealed road to the property. The property is home to 10 chickens and a cockerel, 6 goats and 6 sheep. Wallabies, bandicoots, possums, potoroos (Potorous tridactylus), various native (to Tasmania) birds including the Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax) visit the property and the creek occasionally hosts a platypus.
The family consists of a couple of empty nesters whose two children are at University. One partner works on the farm full time, the other has been working fulltime as a teacher but is about to take early retirement and devote their time to the property.
