COMPARING FORMS
Prompt #1
According to Plato, the highest level of reality is populated by entities called the Forms. He introduces these entities
in order to explain several philosophically interesting features of our ordinary experience. In this essay, you will
examine and evaluate both the theory of the forms put forward by Plato and the competing theory put forward by Aristotle.
1. Explain the role that the Forms play in Plato’s philosophical system.
2. Present and explain Aristotle’s alternative the theory of the forms.
3. Decide which of these competing theories is more plausible. Do you think Plato’s theory of the forms is
more plausible than Aristotle’s or vice-versa? Defend your answer.

Prompt #2

In the Republic, Plato claims that the best form of government is a meritocracy in which philosopher-kings make all
the important decisions. Generations of readers have been intrigued by this proposal. In this essay, you will examine
and evaluate it. To do this successfully, you will:
1. Describe Plato’s account of the relationship between the just city and just person.
2. Explain why, given the above account, Plato thinks that philosophers should rule (and thus that meritocracy
is the best form of government).
3. Evaluate Plato’s account of the just city. Do you think his ideal form of government is the best form of
government? If so, how would you defend Plato’s view against someone who disagrees? If not, explain where Plato goes wrong.
