Critically discuss studies on compliance

Aim: To appreciate the impact of social influences on human behaviour

Scenario / case study (if applicable)
You are an occupational psychologist who has been asked to improve staff productivity and compliance to legislation in a hospital setting. At this hospital staff do not follow the official code of conduct. Six months ago a very high status manager was employed to ‘fix the problem’. The manager was concerned about the length of time, for instance, it was taking staff to see patients and mindful of the fact that should this pattern continue, the Care Quality Commission may impose special measures against the hospital. To address this immediate concern, the manager stated that staff should not wait for a doctor to sign paperwork before attending to patients. Since then new members of staff have been recruited to ease the workload on staff. The new members of staff are following the actions of previous staff members rather than the code of conduct.

Task (1)
Using your knowledge of social influence, critically explain the behaviour of staff members working at the hospital, making reference to research throughout.

(2) Critically suggest and reflect on guidance (recommendations) to the Hospital Board of Governors on how to improve the situation.

GUIDELINES FOR ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS 1. Produce your work in a report format, which means you may employ headings, e.g. The Scenario,

Definitions of Key Psychological Concepts, Studies, Application and Evaluation of Studies, Recommendations, Conclusion. 2. Popular social influence studies include Asch, Milgram, Crutchfield, Sherif, Hofling, Zimbardo. 3. Report must include reference to the scenario. 4. Explain the behaviour of staff in relation to psychological research. 5. Include advice and guidance for the board (recommendations). 6. Provide in-text references accompanied by a complete reference list. Format:

1. INTRODUCTION – OBJECTIVES (USE STUDIES ON SOCIAL INFLUENCE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO CONFORMITY AND OBEDIENCE, AND RELATE THESE TO A GIVEN CASE STUDY (see brief); TO SUGGEST IMPROVEMENTS TO HOSPITAL PRACTICE, MAKING REFERENCES TO RESEARCH AND CODE OF CONDUCT). Define conformity and obedience as part of introduction, or you may go to next section yo do it.

2. STUDIES ON SOCIAL INFLUENCE (MAY INCLUDE DEFINATIONS IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO) – AN OVERVIEW OF STUDIES – ASCH (Conformity); SHERIF (Autokinetic study to illustrate conformity); HOFLING (Obedience – 22 nurses); MILGRAMS’s( electric shock experiment – obedience); ZIMBARDO(Prison study – Roles, for both obedience and conformity). You did not have to summarise all of them – one for conformity and one for obedience may be sufficient for your purpose.

3. APPLICATION OF STUDIES – STUDIES, INCLUDING TYPES OF CONFORMITY,ETC. THE CASE STUDY – CODE OF CONDUCT/LEGISLATION – eg. You can refer to NMC Code of conduct – PREVIOUS PSYCHOLOGICA KNOWLEDGE

4. EVALUATION OF STUDIES – ONE OF MILGRAM, HOFLING, SHERIFF,ASCH, OR ZIMBADO – Doesn’t mean you can’t use more than one if appropriate.

– ETHICAL ASPECT – Cs ( Consent, confidentiality, conduct, competence) and Ds (Deception, debriefing, distress) – doesn’t mean you must refer to all of them. Use only what is relevant.

– METHODOLOGIVAL ASPECT, that is , validity (e.g’ ecological validity), sampling (selection of participants)

5. RECOMMENDATIONS – CODE OF CONDUCT/LEGISLATION/ HOSPITAL PROTOCOL – KNOWLEDGE OF CONFORMITY AND OBEDIENCE, EG. INFORMATIONAL CONFORMITY AND TRAINING.
