After reviewing the lessons for week one on Christians and the study on secular literature I have determined that I agree with the statement “Literature helps you to
be exposed to the plight of the world around you and the needs of your contemporaries.” Before I can explain why I agree I must first define each part of my previous
statement. Literature is “writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential
features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays.” The word plight is defined as a condition, state, or situation, especially and unfavorable or unfortunate
one.” Finally the word contemporary is defined as existing, occurring, or living at the same time; belonging to the same time.”
By studying literature individuals are able to read and become exposed to the good and bad things occurring in the modern world. However it is most important for
Christians to be able to understand the bad. By understanding the current crisis’s happening everyday through secular literature, we as Christians can relate and apply
our beliefs in order to help the situations. Secular literate is also a way to better understand what these good and bad things happening throughout the World are
while also understanding as to why they happen.
Christianity has evolved over time depending on the current contemporary. That is why it is also important to understand secular literature when looking at
contemporaries. We must evolve as Christians to the forever changing world while also worshiping our God. We do not have to hide our beliefs but we should change or
modernize the way we as Christians spread Gods word.
