According to several studies, African Americans are overdiagnosed/misdiagnosed with the label of Schizophrenia and underdiagnosed with Affective Disorders like Bipolar
Disorder or Major Depressive Disorder. In class today we discussed how one explanation for this finding is clinician bias: that clinicians are predisposed to judge
African Americans as Schizophrenic but not as suffering from an affective disorder. In your opinion, where could this clinical bias/predisposition stem from? Could
misunderstood idioms of distress, lack of awareness of cultural syndromes, cultural mistrust or some other variable play a role? If so, how?
