CAL Final Report Sample Structure Because of the nature of this type of project, CAL Final Reports vary in structure and design. Generally speaking, an effective CAL Final Report may be structured in the following manner:
Problem Identification: A brief review of the issue that was previously identified. This is an opportunity to summarize the issue, review the players/stakeholders, etc. Extensive detail or analysis is not typically found in problem identification. However, appropriate reference of research can help frame the situation as a definable problem with at least one potential solution. Please note that this section should not duplication the “Problematising Write-ups” submitted earlier in the module. As noted above, it could simply and very briefly restate the identified problem. However, one of the benefits of “learning in action” is that your conceptualisation of the problem may develop as you take action. Therefore, this section is also an opportunity for you to reframe your present understanding of the problem.
A Review of the Literature: With the issue clearly framed, students may present the research that will support their plan to implement change – the “plan of action”. A good use of literature might point to the outcomes of relevant research to support decisions made in the development of the proposed plan. Again, this section should not duplicate the “Critical Literature Review” submitted earlier.
Application of CAL to the Problem: a description of how Critical Action Learning (CAL) has been (and/or will be) applied to the identification of the issue, the development of a plan to address the issue, and the outcome(s). Appropriate use of published research can help identify the role of CAL in this process.
The Plan: A detailed presentation of the steps taken to address the issue and/or implement the proposed change. Presentation in a manner that may enable readers facing a similar issue to implement the plan might be an effective strategy.
Current Status/Outcome: A recount of the result or current standing. To what extent has the plan been developed, revised, formalized or implemented? Has there been any success? What challenges have been encountered to date? What repercussions have there been to date?
NOTE: Because no two CAL reports are the same, a particular report may warrant a structure that does not reflect the above suggestions. Thoughts regarding the structure of the report may be discussed with your Doctoral Tutor.
