Effects of advertising
7
This course concludes with a look at advertising and the culture of consumerism. You will have the opportunity to choose a product or service and highlight how you have seen it being advertising. Remember that the assignment is about advertising (the practice or business) not advertisement (a single ad).

You will also have an opportunity in this assignment to explain your thoughts regarding how media affects culture and how you can continue developing your media literacy.

Resources: Week 5 readings and videos

Prepare a 15- to 20-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation of Parts 1 and 2 in which you investigate the role of advertising in a culture of consumerism.

Part 1: Be sure to discuss the following questions (These are general answers not to be applied to Part 2):

Who determines ethical standards for advertising? Name three general, national organizations with regulatory power or professional influence.
Name several ways advertising has affected American culture and behavior in the long term ? (Examples are not by themselves “how.) How has advertising changed culture and behavior, both for good and bad.
What are the key persuasive or propaganda techniques used in consumer advertising as found in our curriculum? (Don’t consult the internet). Illustrate with specific examples, explaining how each technique works.
Discuss some of the critical issues that may arise in the following areas:
Children and advertising
Advertising in schools
Health and advertising
Political advertising
Part 2:

Choose one product or service from these categories:

Fast food
Consumer products
Personal care products
Automotive
Research the Internet to analyze how that product or service has been advertised.

Insert into the presentation an executable link to one commercial that strikes you as particularly creative and appealing. No collections, compilations, infomercials, or foreign commercials please. An executable link means that when the slide show is running, your instructor can click on your link and it launches the video.

What persuasive elements in it are unusual?
What is the target group of the commercial?
How does the commercial appeal to consumers?
Why do you believe this commercial to be effective in brand name recognition?
How are ethical standards met (or pushed to their limits)?
Illustrate your findings with specific examples.

Format consistent with APA formatting guidelines. Check spelling and punctuation
