Energy Transformation Project
Describe the importance of energy transformation processes, focusing on cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
While photosynthesis provides usable chemical energy for living things by capturing energy from the sun, cellular respiration allows organisms to break down that chemical energy and put it into a more immediately available form. These processes are critically important to the carbon cycle as both utilize organic (carbon based) molecules and convert them in various ways. A number of human activities negatively impact the environment and potentially disrupt the carbon cycle by interfering with these processes. In this project, you will describe the importance of these energy transformation processes in two parts: a letter and a PowerPoint presentation.
Part A: Letter
Begin by finding a company that has some negative environmental impact. This can be a logging company, a gas extraction company, a paper mill, or any type of organization that you feel should be more conscious of their environmental footprint. You will write a letter to the company that clearly and concisely states your concerns about their practices and the environmental effects, focusing on the roles of photosynthesis and respiration. Use the skeleton outline below as a guideline.
Dear (Insert the name of the person you are addressing in the company)
Paragraph 1: Introduction (5-7 sentences)
• Introduce yourself (name, qualifications)
• Briefly state your concerns about the practices of the company (what do they do and what actions are of particular concern)
• Provide an overview of the purpose of your letter
Paragraphs 2 and 3: Environmental Effects (~7 sentences per paragraph; ~14 sentences total)
• Elaborate on the negative environmental impact of the company and what specifically they do to harm the environment
• Explain how these actions affect the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
o Consider the reactants necessary and how the environmental disturbance might affect these processes
o Explain each process generally (you don’t have to go into specifics) to demonstrate/ enhance your points
Paragraph 4: Conclusion (~4 sentences)
• Summarize your purpose and offer a suggestion for an alternate plan
• Request a meeting to further discuss your concerns and plans
• Closing sentence

Part B: PowerPoint Presentation
In this portion, you will assume that your letter was successful in gaining the attention of the company’s board of directors. You have been invited to meet with the board to discuss your concerns. To prepare for this meeting, you will create a PowerPoint presentation following the guidelines below:
• Slide 1: Introduce yourself and your purpose
• Slide 2: Discuss the concerns you have about the company’s environmental practices
• Slide 3: Explain the immediate environmental impacts of these practices
• Slide 4: Explain the long term effects on the environment, focusing on how photosynthesis and respiration will be impacted
• Slide 5: Offer a suggestion for an alternative practice that allows the company to continue to be profitable and reach their goals with less of an effect on the environment
• Slide 6: Concluding remarks
