DescriptionX-Ray an Argument – This informal assignment asks you to read like a writer and to create another reverse outline of an argument’s structure. Please carefully read and document the argumentative moves that the writer makes.
The assignment basics:
Analyze the editorial.
You will probably need to read the editorial multiple times before you start this assignment to make sure you understand the argumentative moves the writer makes. It may even help to print the editorial and make notes on the hard copy.
Begin by creating a reverse outline of the article.
What does each paragraph accomplish? How does the essay progress from one idea to the next? Does the writer include research? If so, what kind and how much?
Determine the argument’s major limbs, the connective tissue, and muscles. We will also be on the lookout for breaks or fractures in the writer’s argument. Where does the editorial fall short? Are you convinced of the writer’s point of view? Find a way to visually represent the strengths and weaknesses. The article is in the additional materials
