Feldman’s Method of Art Criticism

An “A” Audio tour will
• Employ a clear, moderately paced, audible, and appropriately enthusiastic voice
• Include the title of the work, artist’s name, and date composed
• Engage the listener with a riveting opening and a strong closing
• Include interesting and relevant historical and biographical information without losing focus on work
• Have a perfect balance of background information and analysis
• Describe only in order to point out subtle aspects, artistic elements and principles, and analysis and interpretation of the work
• Get the listener to look at the artwork throughout (using pointer words, questions, etc.)
• Zoom in to important aspects and artistic elements of the work
• Support interpretation with textual evidence
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the audio tour genre, its audience, circumstance, and purpose
• Have clear and effective transitions and be well organized
• Use succinct and precise language
• Use minimal, if any, forms of the verb “to be”; use active voice throughout
• Will not use first person
• Talk about the work in present tense
• Cite direct quotations and any obscure information within the prose
• Use MLA style of documentation and include a works cited page
• Stay within the 4-5 minute limit

The audio tour should include but not limited to the following:
Artist, time, history.
objective description of some parts
Main focus of the painting
Ask question and then answer to make it sounds like a story
Compare to other paintings at the same period
Talk about title
Divide the painting into 4 parts
Talk about the body language of figures in the painting to help understand what they are doing
Use secondary resources
Focus on why and how
