Significance” on page 206 of our text. The latter essay was presented in 1954 at a Howard University symposium, which marked the 30th anniversary of the first
Opportunity-sponsored gathering in 1924. In this essay, as its title suggests, Charles S. Johnson gives a detailed assessment of the Harlem Renaissance and its
outcomes. It has been 60 years since Charles S. Johnson wrote and spoke the words in his essay. Based upon your own knowledge of the Harlem Renaissance, please assess
and react to James Weldon Johnson’s “from Black Manhattan” and Charles S. Johnson’s “The Negro Renaissance and Its Significance.” Please support your assessment and
