1- You are the office manager in a small, capitated medical group practice where the contracted HMO rate is $15.00 per member per month. During an especially heavy flu season one of the doctors complains that the contract stinks as he gets only $15.00 for the HMO patients but gets $45.00 for non-HMO patients. He thinks the HMO contract should be canceled at renewal time. What point is the doctor missing and how can you calm him down?

2- A hospital plans to do an expansion and is considering building a small additional wing on the facility dedicated to patients with Alzheimer’s disease. You are on the planning committee and are asked to do a cost-benefit analysis of the proposal. What would be some of the main points in your report? Include a discussion of the opportunity cost(s) involved.

3- A doctor has developed a new procedure in the treatment of leukemia in children done on an outpatient basis. The doctor has approached you as the Director of Revenue regarding the profitability of this procedure. The doctor theorizes that if the charge is high enough to cover his marginal costs, the hospital’s bottom line will improve. What would be your response?
